Dear Colleagues,

I want to thank you for your work this past weekend. Your leadership and dedication as APA's policymaking body shone through in so many ways – from your willingness to pursue a novel hybrid meeting format, to your focus on policies that truly advance APA's mission and benefit society.

I am especially proud that we did not shy away from complex and challenging issues – like systemic racism and health equity – and reached a monumental milestone for the Association in this regard. Because Council adopted an apology for APA and the field's role in promoting and sustaining racial inequities, you have helped APA and the profession and discipline of psychology pave a more diverse, equitable, inclusive, and – critically – actionable path forward.  I really appreciate all of you—your walk with me during this journey.

We also have compiled a summary of highlights from the October 29 & 30, 2021 Council meeting, which can be found here.

As you all know, now is when the difficult work begins to turn Council's unanimous decision to adopt APA's apology into meaningful action. In order to engage the broader APA membership in this work and to learn from their lived experiences as well as their clinical perspectives, research, and advocacy, APA is hosting town halls to provide a safe space and open forum for all APA members to react to and ask questions about APA's apology, the process by which it was created, and how it will prompt action.

We hope that your engagement and leadership around APA's anti-racism work does not stop with Council's actions this past weekend. As boards, committees and others begin their pieces of the work on implementation, I encourage you to provide feedback and suggestions through our member Comment Portal or email APA's Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Office (edi@apa.org) with questions.

As I wrap up my year as APA President, I cannot tell you how proud I am – not only of Council's determination to work through difficult issues and incorporate different perspectives, but how you have positioned the organization for continued impact on critical societal issues in the months and years to come.

Jennifer
