Personal behavior patterns (i.e., lifestyle) increase risk for chronic disease and premature death. Unhealthy behaviors (e.g., physical inactivity/unhealthy food choices, tobacco use, prescription opioid abuse) represent the leading cause of chronic disease and premature deaths in the U.S. and are a major driver behind spiraling healthcare costs. These risk behaviors are overrepresented among socioeconomically disadvantaged populations and are major contributors to the problem of health disparities.  

 

During the Conference, scholars from leading U.S. universities and medical centers will share their research and knowledge on how to apply the concepts and methods of behavioral economics to improve scientific understanding and clinical outcomes with these highly challenging and costly public health problems in the areas of obesity, tobacco use and prescription opioid abuse.

This is part of an exciting new cluster-hire initiative that will support six new faculty positions in Psychology (this position), Human Development and Family Studies, Nutrition, Health Outcomes and Policy, Kinesiology and Nursing. The overarching goal of the initiative is to develop an interdisciplinary group of independent research programs and a central resource for those interested in health disparities across ten colleges and schools across campus.

The specific area is open but we would welcome applications from people in all aspects of substance abuse and psychopharmacology, including human studies and experimental models. 

We expect a diverse range of research approaches across the initiative, including large-scale population-based studies, small- or large-scale interventions, or laboratory based approaches using experimental animal models. The key element is a publication and research record aimed at characterizing or alleviating health disparities.

NIH Postdoctoral Research Associate Opportunity
The Addiction Recovery Research Center of the Virginia Tech Carilion Research Institute has NIH-funded postdoctoral research associate opportunities in a state-of-the-art research facility. The postdoctoral associate will contribute to NIDA, NIAAA, NCI, and NIDDK funded research studies employing behavioral economics and neuro-economic approaches to address addiction, obesity, and other health behaviors using both human laboratory and clinical trial methodologies. These positions will participate in studies using our International Quit & Recovery Registry and studies employing neuro-modulatory transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and fMRI technologies. Research duties will involve authoring and co-authoring manuscripts, assisting with grant writing, and collaborating with investigators. The Addiction Recovery Research Center has an exceptional track record of helping postdoctoral associates further their careers as investigators.
Appointment: 2-3 yrs.
Eligibility: Applicants should be interested in pursuing a career in addiction, obesity, and health behaviors research. Applicants should also be effective and productive writers and have research training in clinical, experimental, or cognitive psychology or related disciplines. As in years past, the APA Convention will offer the Resource Room for Persons with Disabilities. This bustling area housed within the main convention center is wholly dedicated to providing services to our convention attendees with disabilities, health conditions, or those with injuries. It is utilized by those who desire a place to rest or relax; need assistance in going to convention sessions and other events; borrow wheelchairs and canes; and secure the services of readers, interpreters, and volunteers.

 

The following information provides additional details regarding these services.  Please share this information with your respective groups and / or individuals who may benefit from these services. • Resource Room For Persons with Disabilities:  This year's Resource Room will be located in the Colorado Convention Center, Exhibit Halls A, B, C. It provides a number of services onsite such as volunteers, a quiet place to rest, wheelchairs to borrow on a temporary basis, and a lap top with JAWS vocalization software. Please see attached flyer for additional information, including hours of operation.

 

• Accessible Transportation:  On-Call, ADA Mini-Coaches will be available for persons with disabilities during the core hours of the Convention to facilitate travel between the Convention Center, contracted APA hotels, and other nearby hotels.  Additionally shuttle bus service between the Convention Center, Hyatt Regency Convention Center Hotel, and the Sheraton Denver Hotel will be provided on full-size 53-passenger Motor Coaches. These will have an electronic lift or ramp for an occupied wheelchair or scooter.  A flyer with additional information will be forwarded at a later time as details become available.

 

• Scooter Rental: APA does not make arrangements or pay for scooter or wheelchair rental. Should a wheelchair or scooter need to be rented during Convention, you may want to contact SCOOTAROUND, a nationwide rental company that our members have used in the past.  Website:  www.scootaround.com or telephone:  (888) 441-7575 (operators are available 24-hours a day, 7 days a week). They can arrange to have the equipment delivered to your hotel and picked up upon departure. A credit card is required to make the arrangements. Alternatively, you may come to the Resource Room to use a loaner wheelchair at no charge.

 

• Sign language Interpreters: APA will provide sign language interpreters for individuals who request the service in advance and submit their detailed session/event schedule to the APA Convention Office by July 7. As stated in the registration guidelines, APA cannot guarantee the availability of interpreters for requests that are not received by this date.  There will also be sign language interpreters to interpret to the audience at the following APA-wide events: the Opening Session, the APA Presidential Address, and the APA / APF Awards Ceremony.

 

If you require sign language interpreting services or any other hearing-assistive service to facilitate your participation at the Convention we will make an attempt to assist you with the arrangements if your schedule is shared with the APA Convention Office by July 7.

 

• Accessibility report: This report is a site observation report based on a scooter roll-through of the Convention Center and the two APA headquarter hotels. Anticipated Start Date: Fall 2016 (Flexible)

 

The Department of Preventive Medicine at the USC Keck School of Medicine is accepting applications for a postdoctoral position offering opportunities to investigate adolescent tobacco and alternative tobacco use across multiple longitudinal cohort studies in a joint behavioral health and epidemiology collaboration within the USC Tobacco Center of Regulatory Science (TCORS).

 

The fellow will participate in scientific activities including all aspects of design, analysis and manuscript preparation, and development of research proposals. The fellow will work closely with investigators in the USC TCORS, including Drs. Rob McConnell and Adam Leventhal, working with the Southern California Children's Health Study and the Happiness & Health Study, respectively, and the USC TCORS investigative team. Work with these two unique and highly productive population resources will be complemented by analyses in the publicly available dataset from the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH) survey, a longitudinal nationally-representative cohort study of more than 40,000 individuals.

 

The USC TCORS is a dynamic, multi-disciplinary, collaborative center, including faculty, postdoctoral, graduate student and undergraduate scholars interested in tobacco regulatory science. USC TCORS investigators have been at the forefront of study of emerging adolescent tobacco use patterns, with seminal publications by current postdoctoral fellows in JAMA, Pediatrics, and a number of other high impact peer-reviewed journals. This is an outstanding opportunity for a new postdoctoral researcher interested in pursuing a career in tobacco use epidemiology and behavioral health.

 

The two-year training program has four core elements including coursework, project immersion, strategies for developing research funding, and professional development and mentoring. Drs. Leventhal and McConnell will be the primary mentors to the successful candidate but opportunities exist for work with other investigators. Trainees will also receive individualized mentorship from members of the TCORS advisory groups. A Career Development Program for early investigators features a weekly peer-directed seminar to strengthen the skills and knowledge base needed for career advancement (e.g., developing career directions and priorities, grant writing, making effective presentations, preparing manuscripts, and developing multidisciplinary research teams). The program has established a track record of success in helping junior investigators to obtain faculty positions and a first NIH award. Upon completion of the training, fellows will be well positioned to be leaders and active participants in the future development and implementation of tobacco policies and tobacco control interventions.

 

Required Qualifications: Applicants must have a doctoral degree, or near completion, in epidemiology, behavioral health, or related field. Applicants must be citizens or noncitizen nationals of the U.S. or have been lawfully admitted for permanent residence by the time of award.
