[#DIV28SUPER] Postdoctoral position at University of New Mexico Center on Alcohol, Substance Use, And Addictions (CASAA)

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

Due to the tremendous success of current trainees in receiving grants and faculty positions, the Center on Alcohol, Substance use, and Addictions (CASAA) at the University of New Mexico has at least one opening for a post-doctoral fellow on our pre- and postdoctoral NIAAA Institutional Research Training grant.

The goal of the grant is to prepare future NIH scientists to conduct research to (1) elucidate the processes of change in drinking behavior, (2) develop and test effective methods to effect change through self-change, treatment and indicated prevention, and (3) develop and test models to disseminate knowledge of effective interventions for diverse populations.  Post-doctoral fellows may come from any discipline relevant to the goals of the training program. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis. Additional information about the training program can be found at: https://casaa.unm.edu/traininggrant.html

Interested applicants should submit a curriculum vitae and a 1-2 page cover letter that addresses their qualifications for and interest in the training program to Katie Witkiewitz, Ph.D., katiew@unm.edu. Applications received by July 1, 2022 will be given best consideration.

[#DIV28SUPER] New Elected Officials

Dear Division 28,

It is with great pleasure that I get to announce the winners of our recent election.

Dr. Jermaine Jones of Columbia University is our new president-elect and Dr. Cecilia Bergeria of Johns Hopkins University in our new member-at-large.  Both will begin their terms in January 2023.

I want to thank Micky Koffarnus and Dennis McBride for also running for office.  Both races were tight!  Micky will continue to serve the division as Fellows Chair and I'm sure that we will find another leadership role for Dennis to fill in no time ;-)

Thanks to everyone who voted and please join me in congratulating Jermaine and Cecilia on their new positions!

-Ryan

[#DIV28SUPER] SAMHSA/APA Policy Fellowship

Dear Colleagues-

Please see below for an exciting opportunity to work as a SAMHSA/APA Policy Fellow. This is a one-year fellowship with an option to extend to a second year.

-Bill Stoops.

Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) APA Policy Fellowship

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) APA Policy Fellowship is a two-year program focused on improving state and community behavioral health systems through federal policies and programs.

SAMHSA is the agency within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) that leads public health efforts to advance the behavioral health of the nation. SAMHSA's works to reduce the impact of substance use and mental illness on America's communities. Fellows will work within the SAMHSA's Center for Mental Health Services (CMHS)

SAMHSA is seeking fellows who are dedicated to improving access to quality mental health and substance use care. Ideal fellows will have strong analytical and writing skills as well as knowledge and experience related to behavioral health care and systems in the United States. Fellows will use their experiences and training in research and/or clinical practice to inform the development and implementation of SAMHSA programs and improve policies and practices. Fellows will work on the Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic (CCBHC) program and on special projects. Potential areas of work include supporting the development and operation of the CCBHC program; program evaluation; development and management of technical assistance efforts; conducting program reviews; supporting interagency partnerships such as the Interdepartmental Serious Mental Illness Coordinating Committee; and development of white papers and other materials for the field. The fellowship will offer the opportunity to impact national programs and policy, engage with CMHS leadership, work on a variety of topics in behavioral health policy, and interact with a range of agencies and stakeholders.

We anticipate that the fellow will serve for a one-year term which can be extended for an additional year at the agreement of both parties. Fellows will be compensated at GS-12 step 1 level (currently $89,834). This full-time fellowship position will be based in the Washington, DC area with options for remote work. It is the expectation that fellows will need to work at SAMHSA headquarters (Rockville, MD) at least one day per week.

Interested applicants should submit a CV and brief statement of interest (2 paragraph maximum) about their interest in improving public mental and behavioral health care systems to bvonachen@apa.org by close of business on May 27, 2022

Research to Address the Real-Life Challenges of Opioid Crisis

While great progress has been made in controlling the COVID-19 pandemic, America's opioid crisis continues to evolve in unexpected ways. The opioid crisis, which worsened during the pandemic and now involves the scourge of fentanyl, claims more than 70,000 lives each year in the United States [1]. But throughout the pandemic, NIH has continued its research efforts to help people with a substance use disorder find the help that they so need. These efforts include helping to find relief for the millions of Americans who live with severe and chronic pain.
