APA Seeks Applicants for Graduate Student Public Interest Policy Internships for 2015-2016

The American Psychological Association’s Public Interest Government Relations Office (PI-GRO) is seeking two graduate student interns for the 2015-2016 academic year.  Graduate student interns will gain first-hand knowledge of the ways in which psychological research can inform public policy and the roles psychology can play in its formulation and implementation. The graduate student intern will spend one year working with PI-GRO staff to influence legislative and regulatory activities impacting populations and issues, such as: aging; children, youth, and families; disabilities; ethnic minorities; individuals with HIV/AIDS; lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender persons; military, veterans and their families; socioeconomic status; women; as well as social concerns (e.g. media; or trauma, violence, and abuse). The intern’s activities include participating in legislative and advocacy work, such as assisting in the preparation of testimony and briefing papers and attending congressional hearings and coalition meetings.  Applications are due on March 19, 2015.

MEET THE KEYNOTES

Carlo DiClemente, Ph.D., is a Professor of Psychology at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County.  He directs several Psychology Department Centers including the MDQUIT Tobacco Resource Center and the Center for Community Collaboration that are involved in state and national capacity building and SAMHSA funded projects on integrated care and SBIRT training and implementation.  Dr. DiClemente is the co-developer of the Transtheoretical Model of behavior change, and the author of numerous scientific publications on motivation and behavior change with a variety of health and addictive behaviors. Dr. DiClemente has co-authored a self-help book, Changing for Good, as well as several professional books, The Transtheoretical Model, Substance Abuse Treatment and the Stages of Change (second edition), and Group Treatment for Substance Abuse: A Stages of Change Therapy Manual.  His book, Addiction and Change: How Addictions Develop and Addicted People Recover, is published by Guilford Press. For his work in the addictions he was given the RWJF Innovators Combating Substance Abuse Award, the ASAM McGovern Award, a lifetime achievement award from ABCT’s Addictive Behavior Group, and a distinguished scientific contribution award from the American Psychological Association’s Division on Addictions.  

A. Thomas McLellan, Ph.D., is Chair of the Board and co-founder of the Treatment Research Institute (TRI) and an experienced substance abuse researcher. From 2009 to 2010, he was Science Advisor and Deputy Director of the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP), a Congressionally confirmed Presidential appointment to help shape the nation’s public policy approach to illicit drug use. At ONDCP, McLellan worked on a broad range of drug issues, including formulation and implementation of the President’s National Drug Control Strategy and promotion of drug treatment through the broader revamping of the national health care system. Dr. McLellan is the recipient of several distinguished awards including the Life Achievement Awards of the American and British Societies of Addiction Medicine; the RWJF Innovator Award; and awards for Distinguished Contribution to Addiction Medicine from the Swedish and Italian Medical Associations. With his at the University of Pennsylvania, Dr. McLellan introduced the Addiction Severity Index and, later, the Treatment Services Review. Both are among the most widely used assessment instruments in the world.

Call for Papers: Experimental and Clinical Psychopharmacology

 

Special Issue for August 2015 on: Sex Differences in Drug Abuse: Etiology and Implications for Prevention and Treatment

 

The goal of this special issue is to broadly highlight how males and females differ in their risks for substance abuse, in their responses to treatments, and in their relapse to substance use after a period of abstinence. Relevant approaches include (but are not limited to) laboratory behavioral, social behavior and environmental context, brain development and function, and the role of genetics, hormones and neuropeptides. Both animal and human methods are appropriate for this issue. Collaborative manuscripts that bridge animal and human findings are especially valued.

 

This special issue is intended to showcase the importance of studying sex differences in drug abuse and how this research might lead to more tailored approaches for prevention and treatment. Laboratories engaged in research in this area may submit review articles or primary research reports to Experimental and Clinical Psychopharmacology to be considered for inclusion in this special issue. Manuscripts should be submitted as usual through the APA Online Submission Portal (www.apa.org/pubs/journals/pha/), and the cover letter should indicate that the authors wish the manuscript to be considered for publication in the special issue on Sex Differences in Drug Abuse.  All submissions will undergo our normal peer review. Manuscripts received no later than March 16, 2015 will be considered for inclusion in the special issue. We strongly encourage individuals to contact us in advance with their ideas and ideally a draft title and abstract.

Postdoctoral Position in Behavioral Pharmacology

 

The Behavioral Pharmacology Laboratory at Davidson College invites applications for a postdoctoral position in the Department of Psychology. The successful applicant will join an NIH-funded laboratory examining behavioral and pharmacological factors contributing to substance abuse and dependence using animal models (e.g., drug self-administration). Candidates must have a PhD or equivalent degree in pharmacology, neuroscience, or psychology, and experience with animal models of behavior. Ideal candidates will have a background in the experimental analysis of behavior with basic expertise in neuroscience and pharmacology. The person accepting this position will play a major role in overseeing two large NIH-funded projects, and typical activities will include (but will not be limited to) collecting data, writing manuscripts, presenting data at scientific conferences, and preparing extramural grants. Because the individual will work with a diverse research team that includes undergraduate students, candidates who have previously worked with undergraduate populations through teaching or research are especially desirable. Undergraduate teaching opportunities may be available to those with interest, but it is not a requirement of the position. Salary will be competitive.

APA EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR FOR SCIENCE

The American Psychological Association (APA) is seeking a senior-level psychologist for the position of Executive Director for its Science Directorate. The APA Science Directorate is one of the four key content-area components of the APA Central Office (along with the Education, Practice, and Public Interest directorates), and its Executive Director is a mem- ber of the APA Executive Management Group, reporting to the APA CEO. The Executive Director supervises and oversees the Science Directorate and is responsible for major APA program areas related to science, including science policy and government relations, research ethics, psychological testing and assessment, scientific awards, summer research training, and communications with the scientific community and general public. The position also includes responsibility for the APA Center for Workforce Studies and the APA Library and Archives. In collaboration with APA boards and committees, the Executive Director plans and implements policy and program development in all matters related to psychological science. The Executive Director acts as liaison to the other APA directorates, the Board of Directors, and to major APA boards, committees, programs, and divisions on all science initiatives. The Executive Director also develops and maintains contact with senior- level officials in scientific organizations and associations and government agencies related to psychological science and broader science issues. Requirements include a doctoral degree in psychology and a minimum of 12 years postdoctoral experience in teaching, academic administration, public policy or other fields related to psychology and science.
