[DIV28SUPER] FW: Follow-Up: FY 2011 Funding - House Passes Bill Cutting NIH Budget by $1.6 Billion

Dear Colleagues

Please note below that the House of Representatives has passed its bill (HR 1) that will substantially cut the NIH budget.  That bill now proceeds to the Senate, where we will have the opportunity to make our argument to block its full passage.

There is still time for action, and we will need your help.  Please stay alert to developments in the media (we will do our job to keep you informed).  Most importantly, be prepared to express forcefully to our senators the need for and benefits of continued investment in scientific research funding at the NIH.

Meanwhile, don't hesitate to express your opinions (good or bad) as to how your representative voted.  Your voice matters!

Thanks, Mark

Follow-Up: FY 2011 Funding - House Passes Bill Cutting NIH Budget by $1.6 Billion Dear Colleague,

The response to my call-to-action last week was phenomenal! More than 1,000 of you called your Representatives to protest the $1.6 billion cut to NIH funding that was proposed in HR 1. I cannot thank you enough for your efforts. We put up a great fight. Unfortunately the bill passed on February 19th. Go to http://clerk.house.gov/evs/2011/roll147.xml to find out how your Representative voted.

Although this is not the outcome we wanted, we were able to rally support for NIH funding. During the debate on HR 1, many House members expressed strong opposition to the cuts and Representatives Markey (D-MA), Schakowsky (D-IL), Courtney (D-CT), Higgins (D-NY), Holt (D-NJ), and Davis (D-CA) attempted to offer an amendment to restore full funding for NIH (it did not receive a vote).

This battle is not over yet. The U.S. Senate will soon consider HR 1, giving us another opportunity to prevent the devastating NIH cuts from becoming law. In the meantime, please go to http://capwiz.com/faseb/issues/alert/?alertid=30382506 to send an email to your Representative thanking him/her for voting against HR 1. If your Representative voted for HR 1 the link will allow you to email him/her expressing your disappointment about their vote.

Sincerely,

William T. Talman, MD

It is with an extraordinarily heavy and sad heart that I report to you the death of Charles Roberts (Bob) Schuster on Monday afternoon Feb 21, in Houston, Texas, from a stroke.

We have lost an amazing scientific pioneer, thought leader and distinguished professor, whose impact will resound for many, many years to come.  He was a champion for our profession and helping people afflicted with problems from substance abuse, a soulful and vital man, an incredibly gracious mentor, and a true friend.  He positively touched so many lives that words cannot adequately express our loss.

Please help support our friend and colleague Chris-Ellyn Johanson, their daughter Alyson and family.  Condolences can be sent to Chris-Ellyn at 1530 South State Street #900, Chicago, IL 60605.

We await details as to funeral/memorial arrangements and will send this information as it becomes available.

I.                    Web Based Meeting to Discuss Solutions to Overcome the Problem of Endosomal Escape for shRNAs/RNAi

The purpose of this web-based meeting is to identify solutions to overcome the problem of endosomal escape for shRNA targeted therapies.  shRNA, small hairpin RNA used to silence the expression of a selected gene has great promise as a therapeutic strategic to modify disease processes.  However, a major roadblock to using shRNA or RNAi as a therapeutic strategy is the problem of endosomal escape.  Current technology permits the targeting of shRNAs to specific cell types via recognition of cell surface molecules or receptors. The shRNA/ligand complex is then internalized into the endosome by endocytosis.  Frequently, the shRNA fails to escape the endosome to find its target mRNA to block translation.  If you are interested in participating and giving a presentation in this web based conference, please contact Dr. Jonathan D. Pollock, Chief, Genetics and Molecular Neurobiology Branch, National Institute on Drug Abuse, jpollock@mail.nih.gov, 301-435-1309. SUMMER RESEARCH WITH NIDA – UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, SAN FRANCISCO

Summer Research with NIDA introduces high school and undergraduate students from underrepresented groups to drug abuse research through research placements with NIDA grantees.  Students work with the grantees for 8-10 weeks. The program exposes students to drug abuse research and encourages them to pursue careers in biomedical and behavioral research. Since 1997, over 700 students have gained research experience in drug abuse research.

The University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) has had a program for the past four years for undergraduate students interested in substance abuse treatment and services research.  The principal investigator is James L. Sorensen, Ph.D., and the goal of the program is to provide summer interns with advanced research experience in community-and university-based treatment settings. Mentors are UCSF faculty affiliated with the Western States Node of the National Drug Abuse Treatment Clinical Trials Network and the San Francisco Treatment Research Center. Research projects include trials of efficacy and effectiveness of psychosocial and pharmacologic treatments of substance abuse and dependence, studies on the evaluation of clinical interventions for nicotine dependence, research on psychological interventions designed to boost the effectiveness of existing HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment approaches among substance abusers, and services research in community settings, including outcome-oriented organizational change processes.

The program's application deadline is March 1, 2011.  Application materials for the Summer Research with NIDA 2011 program are now available at: http://www.nida.nih.gov/pdf/sposummer.pdf

Dr. Sorensen's Program – Substance Abuse Treatment and Services Research in Community and University-Based Settings – is program number 47 in the NIDA materials.

Scientist Spotlight is a monthly series that asks senior and mid-level scientists to provide information on how they choose to balance work and life responsibilities. This column is in response to an overwhelming request from Early Career Psychologists that more information (and assistance) in learning how to balance work and life be made available.  We are hopeful that by reading how different scientists balance work and life goals and responsibilities, graduate students and Early Career Psychologists will be better prepared to develop methods for being successful in science while still meeting personal life goals. Overall, we hope you find this series useful and enjoyable!

Please contact Kelly Dunn (kdunn9@jhmi.edu) or Sarah Tragesser (stragesser@tricity.wsu.edu) to nominate someone to be highlighted in this series.
