We are excited to encourage any and all basic science and clinical researchers to submit abstracts for the 126th annual American Psychological Association convention. This year's convention will be held in beautiful San Francisco, California on August 9-12, 2018.

 

We need your help in making this a strong and breakout convention that highlights the latest and greatest in clinical and basic science research. Make plans now to drink great coffee and dodge bicycles on the way to see terrific posters and presentations. Take pleasure in knowing that someone is tech-ing out on a cable car trying to get to YOUR AWESOME WORK.  Together we can make this happen!

 

The 2018 Division 28 program will provide multiple networking opportunities and will highlight several hot-topic areas, including the opioid crisis and cannabis legalization, and clinical and research tools, like non-invasive brain stimulation and data crowdsourcing. We especially welcome submissions dealing with topics related to substance abuse in diverse populations, but all submissions related to psychopharmacology and substance abuse are welcome. We hope to see submissions featuring the work of students, early career investigators and established investigators.

The University of New Mexico (UNM) is currently seeking a dynamic, innovative, results-oriented, senior addiction scientist for the position of Director of the Center on Alcoholism, Substance Abuse and Addictions (CASAA), one of UNM’s premier strategic research centers. The selected candidate will report directly to the Vice President for Research (VPR), and will be a tenured faculty member of the College of Arts and Sciences.

Minimum Qualifications

·        Ph.D., M.D., DrPH (or comparable terminal degree) in a field relevant to addictions research

[#DIV28SUPER] Opportunity for Doctoral Studies in Health Behavior with Research Focus on Addictions

Dear Colleagues and Students,

 

Faculty in the Department of Health Education and Behavior at the University of Florida (UF) are seeking doctoral students for their Ph.D. program in Health and Human Performance with Concentration in Health Behavior. The program is well suited to outstanding students who seek intensive research training and education pertaining to health psychology, public health and community-based research for whom clinical training is not a primary or immediate interest. Admission to the doctoral program comes with a graduate assistantship that provides a tuition waiver covering full-time coursework, health insurance, plus stipend.

 

The topic of addictions is a research strength throughout UF with international leaders in this area located throughout the university. Several faculty in the Department have research programs focused on the addictions, including Drs. Jalie Tucker, JeeWon Cheong, Robert Leeman, Richard Yi, Ali Yurasek and beginning in Spring 2018, Megan McVay. In particular, Drs. Leeman and Yurasek are actively seeking new doctoral students for Fall 2018.

 

Dr. Leeman’s research focus is on relationships between addictive behaviors and other difficulties with self-control. He and his collaborators contribute to understanding the etiology of addictions and in testing new interventions to ameliorate addictive behaviors. His research pertains primarily to the adolescent and young adult populations. Dr. Leeman’s group is currently conducting two NIH-funded studies to test mobile interventions to reduce alcohol use and related risky sexual behavior.

 

Dr. Yurasek’s primary research interests include using behavioral economic theory to identify risk factors for substance misuse and poor response to treatment as well as examining marijuana use amid the changing legal climate.

II. Exploiting HIV and/or Host Genomic Information to Understand HIV Compartments or Reactivation in Individuals with Substance Use Disorders (R61/R33)
(RFA-DA-18-016)  Application Receipt Date:  December 13, 2017 by 5 pm local time of applicant organization.

• Purpose:  This initiative will support exploratory projects that exploit HIV or host genomic or nucleomic information to understand HIV latency in individuals with substance use disorders (SUDs).

 

• NIDA intends to commit $2 million dollars in FY2018 to fund 3-4 awards

 

• Application budgets are limited to $650,000 direct costs and must reflect the actual needs of the proposed project.

 

• The R61/R33 grant mechanism includes an exploratory high risk/high pay off R61 phase (three years).  Near the end of the R61 phase, NIDA scientific staff will review progress made towards the proposed R61 milestones and recommend a subset of R61 projects for continued support through the R33 phase (two years) pending merit and the availability of funds

 

• Nucleomics:  robust nuclear architecture assays (e.g. Hi-C, ChIA-PET, DamID, cellular imaging approaches) 

 

 

III. Request for Information (RFI): Seeking Input from Surgeons and Interventionalists on Improving the Clinical Study and Use of New and Established Peripheral Neuromodulation Devices  NOT-RM-17-023: The NIH SPARC (Stimulating Peripheral Activity to Relieve Conditions) program aims to enable the development of the next generation of neuromodulation devices informed by promoting the systematic development of high resolution neural circuit maps within organs and tissues of the peripheral nervous system. Therapeutic development may be stimulated by increasing the understanding of human peripheral neuroanatomy and its relationship to organ function, which may be facilitated by stronger linkages between clinical practice and basic research. To guide future efforts, SPARC is requesting input from surgeons, interventionalists, and other relevant clinicians on partnering to improve the clinical study of neuromodulation devices, specifically in applications involving peripheral or spinal neuromodulation of organ function. Comments should be provided by 1 December 2017.

Psychology Training in Alcohol Research Fellowship

This is a two‐year appointment, commencing no earlier than July 1st and no later than December 31st
of each year, within the Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences and the Addictive Behaviors
Research Center in the Department of Psychology, and is funded by the National Institute on Alcohol
Abuse and Alcoholism (Principal Investigator, Dr. Mary Larimer). This fellowship will provide
training for individuals who wish to pursue a career in alcohol research, with an emphasis on the
etiology and prevention of problem drinking and alcohol dependence.
As this topic will be approached from both psychosocial and bio‐behavioral perspectives,
individuals with background training in relevant areas of psychology (clinical, health psychology,
behavioral neuroscience, social, developmental, cognitive, behavioral pharmacology, etc.) are
encouraged to apply. Both human and animal research will be supported.

Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and the Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago are seeking a clinical psychologist to join a multidisciplinary Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Pediatric Division of Adolescent Medicine in a nationally-ranked, freestanding children's hospital located on the medical school campus. Duties are primarily to: 1) conduct screenings and outpatient diagnostic evaluations of adolescents and young adults who experience problems with substance use; 2) provide psychological treatment of and/or referrals for adolescents and young adults with substance use disorders and their families; 3) consult to parents, schools and medical/surgical staff; 4) teach in multidisciplinary child health, mental health, and adolescent medicine education and training programs; and 5) conduct research related to adolescent and young adult substance use disorders. Clinical and/or research experience with adolescents and young adults with problems with substance use is required. A PhD in clinical psychology and APA-approved internship are required, with at least one year of supervised experience with children and adolescents preferred. This position comes with 50% protected research time for the first 3 years of appointment. It is expected that the successful candidate will develop a program of research related to adolescent and young adult substance use disorders supported by external funding sources following the initial research support period.

Rank and salary commensurate with qualifications and experience. Full-time position. Start date immediate after licensure in Illinois. The Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth offers a unique postdoctoral training program in a developing area of transdisciplinary/translational research, co-occurring substance use and other mental disorders (COD) http://geiselmed.dartmouth.edu/scd/.  The philosophy of this program asserts that to effectively impact the problems of addiction and mental illness, one must be fully aware of their co-existence, etiologies, phenomenology, and clinical manifestations. Moreover, knowledge of integrated clinical approaches and the healthcare systems that serve those with co-occurring disorders are necessary to inform the questions to be asked in laboratory, animal and human imaging and clinical research studies.

 

At Dartmouth, six interconnected groups from neuroscience through implementation research, and across multiple departments provide research opportunities in intervention research, including digital health interventions, and developmental, social, behavioral, neurobiological mechanisms of addiction and co-occurring disorders. Faculty include preeminent national/international leaders and PhD and MD investigators with strong histories of training scientists. Program faculty lead diverse projects funded by many NIH institutes (NIDA, NIAAA, NIMH, NCI, NCATS and NICHD).

 

Appointment: Typically 2 years.  Eligibility: Applicants must have completed their training in psychology, or a related discipline and be U.S. citizens or permanent residents. [#DIV28SUPER] UNT Behavioral Science PhD Program announcement

Dear Colleagues,

I am requesting that you share this announcement about applying to the University of North Texas (UNT) Behavioral Science PhD Program, which is part of the UNT Department of Psychology (https://psychology.unt.edu/).

In particular, I will be looking to accept an applicant to start as a Behavioral Science graduate student in the Fall 2018 semester. This graduate student will be mentored by me and will become a part of my lab, the Disposition, Emotion, & Addiction Research (DEAR) Laboratory, which is broadly interested in the etiology of addictive behaviors but is currently focused on anxiety and cigarette smoking (with an upcoming experimental study on anxiety sensitivity in relation to the effects of smoking components during withdrawal). Other Behavioral Science faculty members with diverse research interests are also planning to accept applicants, though the other Behavioral Science faculty member with substance-related research interests (Dr. Heidemarie Blumenthal) is not currently looking to accept a student. However, collaboration with other Behavioral Science faculty members is strongly encouraged, and collaborating with Clinical and Counseling faculty members is also a possibility.
