New Funding Opportunities Open in September
On September 7, PCORI will begin accepting applications through our Phased Large Awards for Comparative Effectiveness Research (PLACER) PCORI Funding Announcement (PFA) totaling up to $200 million. This PFA offers funds to support large, multiphase comparative clinical effectiveness research (CER) studies designed to fill critical gaps in evidence and support healthcare decision making. Prospective applicants are invited to attend a September 10 town hall for more information.

PCORI is also accepting applications through several Broad PFAs for CER studies aligned with our current National Priorities, offering a cumulative total of $72 million. Within these opportunities, new special areas of focus will include telehealth for chronic disease management among vulnerable populations and addressing systemic racism, discrimination, and bias in healthcare systems and healthcare delivery. Prospective applicants are invited to attend a September 8town hall for more information.

In addition, PCORI will consider proposals through an Implementation PFA for projects that aim to implement CER results generated by PCORI-funded studies in real-world practice settings, moving evidence toward practical use in improving health care and health outcomes.

[#DIV28SUPER] Call for Papers for Special Issue of Psychology of Addictive Behaviors: "Addictive Behavior as Behavioral Allocation"

Call for Papers for Special Issue of Psychology of Addictive Behaviors on

“Addictive Behavior as Behavioral Allocation”

Guest Editor Jalie A. Tucker with Associate Guest Editors Joanna Buscemi,

James G. Murphy, and Derek D. Reed

Fifty years ago basic science research on behavioral choice fomented a revolution in reinforcement theory by showing that any voluntary behavior can be fruitfully studied as choice arising out of a context of all possible behaviors and associated environment constraints. As epitomized by the pioneering work of psychologist Howard Rachlin, research on behavior patterns over time in relation to available activities in the surrounding environment demonstrated that preference for a given activity varies with constraints on its access and on the other alternatives, and strength of preference for an activity is measured by the relative amount of resource (e.g., time, effort, money) allocated to gain access to it. This molar level of analysis relating rates of behavior to rates of consequences over time laid the foundation for the emergence of behavioral economics in the 1980s, and seminal applied connections were soon made between the molar choice perspective, behavioral economics, and the analysis of substance use in humans. This work has continued to the present and has expanded to include other addictive and health behaviors.

This special issue, dedicated to Howard Rachlin who died in 2021, honors his work and recognizes his influence on applied research on addictive behaviors, the initial area of application and arguably the most successful to date. Manuscripts are sought in all areas of research on human addictive behaviors spanning the basic to applied continuum that aim to understand addictive behavior as molar behavior allocation patterns over time. Conceptual, empirical, and methodological contributions that advance applied research on addictive behaviors and inform positive behavior change at the individual or community level will be considered. For example, papers may focus on the behavioral economics or neuroeconomics of addictive behaviors; choice behavior and decision-making processes; choice biases and choice architecture in strategies to reduce addictive behavior; intervention approaches informed by behavioral economics or theories of choice; natural recovery from addictive behavior patterns; measurement approaches in laboratory and natural environments; quantitative methods for representing and analyzing data on behavioral patterning over time; social cooperation and interactions with addictive behaviors; and unresolved and under-developed conceptual and empirical issues in the field. Papers that contextualize individual choice behavior within broader community and policy environments and consider social determinants of health will be given favorable consideration.

We will consider full-length articles and brief reports that present on original research and scholarship. All submissions must adhere to journal guidelines and will undergo peer review. The special issue article type will be open to submissions on August 10, 2021 with a deadline for manuscript submission on February 15, 2022. Prior to submitting a manuscript, authors are asked to submit a brief letter of intent to Guest Editor Dr. Jalie A. Tucker (jaliet@ufl.edu).

[#DIV28SUPER] Reminder Call for Papers: Experimental and Clinical Psychopharmacology Special Issue

Reminder Call for Papers: Experimental and Clinical Psychopharmacology (Due: Oct 1, 2021)

Special Issue on Crowdsourcing Methods in Addiction Science: Emerging Research and Best Practices

This Special Issue will assemble a collection of papers on best practices and emerging research using crowdsourcing for addiction science. With the changing landscape of work amidst the global COVID-19 pandemic and increasing costs associated with collecting large participant samples, addictions researchers are increasingly turning to alternative methods for recruiting participants and collecting data. Crowdsourcing platforms—such as Amazon Mechanical Turk, Prolific, and Qualtrics Panels—have become a dominant form of sampling in recent years. These crowdsourcing platforms allow researchers to continue to collect data from large samples of human participants when face-to-face visits are challenging, cost-prohibitive, or infeasible (e.g., research sites at logistically prohibitive distances, social distancing requirements during COVID-19). Alongside optimism about the practical benefits that crowdsourcing may provide are uncertainties about the validity of these Internet-based approaches and how they can (and cannot) be used. Any articles addressing the use of crowdsourcing in addictions science are welcome, but three areas are of specific interest. First, the issue aims to provide an historical and contemporary overview of available crowdsourcing platforms and how these have been used in addiction and behavioral science research. Second, innovative examples of original research studies will be included to illustrate the unique promise of crowdsourcing. The third area of emphasis involves the potential pitfalls of using this technology for data collection and methods to ensure that data are reliable and valid. Taken together, the overarching goal of this Special Issue is to highlight best practices for using crowdsourcing in addiction science while also drawing attention to important methodological and conceptual limitations of this methodology.

We encourage submission of review articles and original research reports in these areas, including novel strategies or methodological advances in crowdsourcing research in addictions. Papers addressing a variety of substances, including alcohol, tobacco, cannabis, and other drugs, as well as behavioral addictions are welcome. Researchers in this area may submit their manuscripts to Experimental and Clinical Psychopharmacology to be considered for inclusion in this special issue. Manuscripts should be submitted as usual through the APA Online Submission Portal (http://pha.edmgr.com/), and the cover letter should indicate that the authors wish the manuscript to be considered for publication in the special issue: Crowdsourcing Methods in Addiction Science: Emerging Research and Best Practices. All submissions will undergo our normal peer review. Manuscripts received no later than October 1, 2021 will be considered for inclusion in the special issue. We strongly encourage individuals to contact the guest editors in advance with their ideas and a draft title and abstract.

Questions or inquiries about the special issue can be directed to the Guest Editors of the issue, Justin Strickland, PhD, at jstric14@jhmi.edu, Michael Amlung, PhD, at mamlung@ku.edu, or Derek Reed, PhD, at dreed@ku.edu, or the Editor, William W. Stoops, PhD at William.stoops@uky.edu.
