Postdoctoral Fellowship in Addiction Research
University of Southern California
Health, Emotion, & Addiction Laboratory
Los Angeles, CA
The University of Southern California Health, Emotion, & Addiction Laboratory (USC-HEAL; heal.usc.edu) is recruiting 2-3 candidates for postdoctoral fellowship positions. Fellows will join a team of 4 PIs (Adam Leventhal, Matt Kirkpatrick, Raina Pang, Jessica Barrington-Trimis) carrying out laboratory, clinical, and population behavioral research on the causes, treatment, and prevention of addiction. Recently completed and ongoing studies address vaping and cannabis use among youth and young adults, smoking cessation pharmacotherapy and counseling, sex differences in tobacco addiction, psychiatric-smoking comorbidity, ecological momentary assessment (EMA) of smoking and smoking cessation, pharmacological effects and appeal of e-cigarettes, genetic association studies of the effects of nicotine deprivation and stimulant administration on mood and behavior, and smoking in African American populations. The fellowship will provide candidates with opportunities to lead and collaborate on data analyses and papers under the mentorship of the PIs. Fellowships also provide training in building an independent research program, grant writing, and other career development activities. Ideal candidates will have outstanding writing skills, excellent data analytic experience (preferably in longitudinal modeling, intensive repeated measures analysis for EMA data, or mixed models for complex factorial experiments), and an interest in pursuing a career in addiction research.
USC-HEAL is a dynamic, multi-disciplinary group of faculty, postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, and undergraduate scholars interested in the intersection of mental health, health behavior, and addiction. USC-HEAL is housed within USC Keck School of Medicine, Department of Preventive Medicine and the Institute for Health Promotion and Disease Prevention Research (IPR; ipr.usc.edu), which administers pre- and post-doctoral raining programs and an NIH/FDA-funded Tobacco Center of Regulatory Science. USC-HEAL is also the hub of a new cross-campus initiative to develop the USC Institute for Addiction Science, which aims to promote interdisciplinary addiction science collaboration and education across public health, social work, psychology, policy, pharmacy, medicine, psychiatry, and other units.
Application review will begin November 28, 2018 and will continue until the position is filled. Start date is flexible but should be no later than fall 2019. To apply, please send a cover letter, statement of research interests, three paper reprints, and CV to: Adam Leventhal adam.leventhal@usc.edu. Applicants should also arrange to have 3 letters of references sent directly to Dr. Leventhal. All materials should be sent via email. Candidates are encouraged to contact Dr. Leventhal or other HEAL faculty PIs with questions.
