Re: [#DIV28SUPER] Virtual Memorial: Poway Synagogue

Maybe OPA, and APA might be willing to take an unusual stand on these shootings and as was done in New Zealand. I would suggest that OPA and APA publicly recommend that the press not print the picture of the shooter in the newspapers as well as show his picture on TV and on social media. If you noticed, the shooter received much more press/pictures from the N Carolina shooting than the hero. The picture of the shooter was physically bigger and shown everywhere as was the person who was going to build bombs in California which was thwarted by the FBI. All this does is glorify the perpetrator and act like a magnet for every other would be shooter/bomber. We have research on suicide in this area and it is called, The Werther Effect. As with the deaths by suicide by such figures as Marilyn Monroe, Robin Williams, and Kurt Cobain the suicide rates clearly went way up following their deaths and publicity in the press. I realize that this might irritate people who feel that this has to do with freedom of the press but we are obviously willing to comment publicly about various types of guns and bump stocks.

The following is message from OPA's Committee on Social Responsibility...

The Poway synagogue shooting occurred on April 27, 2019, when an alleged 19 year old gunman armed with an AR-style rifle fired shots inside the Chabad of Poway synagogue in Poway, close to San Diego California. The attack took place on the last day of the Jewish Passover holiday. One woman was killed and three other people were injured, including the synagogue's rabbi. Tragedies relative to gun violence have become increasingly prevalent in the United States. There have also been recent up rises and concerns relative to Anti-Semitism, and gun violence against individuals due to their religion.

We are opening up a Virtual Memorial, in the form of a live forum. The Virtual Memorial allows us to discuss this attack and its effects on us personally and professionally within the psychology community. Please use our live blog below to share or process any thoughts or feelings you have about this incident. You can also share any resources for clinicians, or ways to show support to others through this time of tragedy.
