2014 APA Achievement Award

for Early Career Professionals

 

The Committee on Early Career Psychologists is pleased to announce the achievement award program for early career members from all areas of psychology (education, practice, public interest and science) to  attend the 2014 APA Annual Convention in Washington, DC, August 7—10 at the Washington Convention Center.

.

Forty award recipients will receive $750 to be applied toward their 2014 APA convention expenses.  The program is designed to encourage first time attendance and increase representation of early career members  at the APA convention.

 

Criteria for applying are: an APA early career member (within ten years receipt of their doctorate) and a first-time convention attendee. In addition, preference will be given to those in independent practice, those in basic psychological science or those who will be presenting at the 2014 convention. The submission package  must include the following information:

 

1.     Brief statement (maximum one page) about your interest in attending the convention and how you will use this award to support your attendance. Please highlight any significant achievements in your career as well as any leadership positions  you have held as an early career psychologist (within APA, other related scholarly or professional organizations such as state and local psychological associations) and indicate how you believe you would benefit from attending the convention.  Also, please  include in your statement if your primary work is in independent practice, basic psychological science, or if the 2014 convention will be your first APA convention and if you will be receiving other funding to help cover your expenses.

 

2.     Please include an abstract of your presentation along with the title and the names of co-presenters that you will be presenting at the 2014 convention.

 

3.     Include your Curriculum Vitae (the year you were awarded a doctorate in psychology should be clearly stated).

 

Electronic submission instructions:  Please submit all materials in a single Word document.  Put your name and the name of the award in the subject line (e.g. Jane Smith, Early Career Achievement Award).

 

The deadline for submission of materials is March 3, 2014, 11:59 pm (EST). Email all materials to earlycareer@apa.org. Award winners will be notified in April 2014 and will be acknowledged during the Early Career Social Hour sponsored by the Committee on Early Career Psychologists at the APA convention in Washington,  DC.

V.   Resource Identification Initiative http://www.force11.org/node/4463

The Resource Identification Initiative (#RII) is designed to help researchers sufficiently cite the key resources used to produce the scientific findings reported in the biomedical literature.  A diverse group of collaborators are leading the project, including the Neuroscience Information Framework and the Oregon Health & Science University Library, with the support of the National Institutes of Health and the International Neuroinformatics Coordinating Facility.  

 

Resources (e.g. antibodies, model organisms, and software) reported in the biomedical literature often lack sufficient detail to enable reproducibility or reuse. For example, catalog numbers for antibody reagents are infrequently reported, and the version numbers for software programs used for data analysis are often omitted.  The Resource Identification Initiative aims to enable resource identification within the biomedical literature through a pilot study promoting the use of unique Research Resource Identifiers (RRIDs).  In addition to being unique, RRID's meet three key criteria, they are:

 

1).  Machine readable;

2).  Free to generate and access;

3).  Consistent across publishers and journals.

The first step in this project is to test the feasibility of the system for a limited set of resources: antibodies, model organisms (mice, zebrafish, flies) and tools (i.e. software and databases) in the biomedical literature.  Authors publishing in participating journals will be asked to provide RRID's for their resources.  RRID's will be drawn from:

• The Antibody Registry
• Model Organism Databases
• NIF Resource Registry

·         To make it easy for authors to find the appropriate RRID's and to format their citations, we have created the Resource Identification Portal, where authors can search across all of sources from a single location.  

·         In addition to facilitating reproducibility and reuse, the inclusion of RRID citations in the literature will allow resource providers, funders, others to better track usage and impact

NADER, PHD is a Professor of Physiology and Pharmacology, Wake Forest University School of Medicine, in Winston-Salem, NC. Dr. Michael Nader’s research interest began in the laboratory of Dr. Alice Young at Wayne State University. He received his Ph.D. in 1985 from the University of Minnesota, under the mentorship of Dr. Travis Thompson and completed post-doctoral training in behavioral pharmacology at Uniformed Services University under the mentorship of Dr. James Barrett. In 1988, he went to the University of Chicago, where Dr. William Woolverton trained him in nonhuman primate models of cocaine abuse. Since 1992, Dr. Nader has been on the faculty in the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology at Wake Forest University School of Medicine, where he is Professor. His research has focused on nonhuman primate models of drug abuse, combining brain imaging with behavioral methods to better understand how environmental (including social) and pharmacological variables influence addiction. His laboratory is the only one in the world studying socially housed monkeys (male and female) in intravenous drug self-administration studies. He has served on Board of Directors of the CPDD, is past-chair of the Division of Behavioral Pharmacology at ASPET and is currently a member of NIDA Council. POSTDOCTORAL POSITION

Adolescent Substance Abuse

Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth, Department of Psychiatry

 

We are seeking an early career scientist interested in pursuing postdoctoral training focused on family based behavioral interventions for adolescents.  The postdoctoral fellow will participate in a randomized clinical trial targeting adolescent substance use.  This trial is using an innovative SMART (sequential multiple assignment randomized trial) design.  Interventions include working memory training, contingency management, a parenting intervention, and cognitive behavior therapy.  In addition, multiple mechanisms are assessed longitudinally, including decision-making (delay discounting), peer relations, parenting, and parent psychopathology.   Neural mechanisms related to working memory and decision making will also be explored, via pre-post fMRI. 

Responsibilities involve coordinating the randomized clinical trial, including supervision of bachelor’s and master’s level research assistants, data management and analysis, and manuscript preparation.  The postdoc will have the opportunity to be the lead author on manuscripts, and to participate in preparation of grant applications.  Overall, the position provides excellent preparation for an academic/scientific career. 

Position is expected to last 2 years, with the possibility of a 3^rd year.  Desired start date is between July 1 and September 1 2014.  Applicants must have completed doctoral training in psychology or a related field and have research experience.  Individuals from disadvantaged groups are encouraged to apply.
