[#DIV28SUPER] University of Kansas Doctoral Student Recruitment

RECRUITING DOCTORAL STUDENTS IN BEHAVIORAL PSYCHOLOGY WITH INTERESTS IN STUDYING ADDICTIVE BEHAVIORS

The BEAN Lab at the University of Kansas (http://addictionlabku.com) is recruiting doctoral students for the Behavioral Psychology PhD program in the KU Department of Applied Behavioral Science—Fall 2023 start date. Students from underrepresented groups are strongly encouraged to apply.

The lab is directed by Dr. Michael Amlung (amlungm@ku.edu), Associate Professor in the KU Department of Applied Behavioral Science and Associate Director for Training for the Cofrin Logan Center for Addiction Research & Treatment.

Our team is an ideal fit for students who are interested in an applied behavior analysis graduate program and a lab that focuses on the intersection between behavioral science, addiction, and mental health. Our research combines behavioral economic methods with experimental psychology and neuroimaging methods to understand the causes, consequences, and treatment of addictions. For example, one of our NIH-funded projects is using functional brain imaging to examine how decisions to drink are influenced by cues related to alcohol using a simulated bar lab environment and next-day responsibilities. We are also conducting studies on co-use of vaping devices and alcohol, cannabis-impaired driving, and decision-making for cannabis products. Students with interests in other addictive behaviors are encouraged to apply.

Current and prior mentees in Dr. Amlung's lab have pursued a range of projects, including exploring behavioral and brain correlates of addiction, examining cognitive-based treatments for addictive disorders such as episodic future thinking, and other behavioral economics research. Trainees have published first-author papers in leading addictions journals and frequently present their research at national and international conferences.

Funding is available in the form of graduate teaching assistantships, graduate research assistantships, tuition waivers, and travel funding for conferences.

Please email Dr. Amlung at mamlung@ku.edu to discuss this opportunity.
