William Stoops, PhD, was awarded a 2020 Presidential Citation for his brilliant research, multi-dimensional leadership at APA, and his positive, enthusiastic demeanor.
"Stoops is an extraordinary psychologist, a full professor of Behavioral Science, Psychiatry, and Psychology at the University of Kentucky (UK), and immersed in the professional and administrative workings of the University. Stoops oversees clinical research, engages with University leadership in strategic planning, and ensures compliance with budgeting in an array of centers of excellence on campus, including the UK Center for Clinical and Translational Sciences and the UK Clinical Research Support Office. Stoops' own research includes study in the neuropharmacology of various drugs of abuse and the development of internet-based treatments for substance abuse.
What is additionally impressive about Stoops, however, is his effective, enthusiastic leadership at APA. Stoops previously served on the Board of Convention Affairs (BCA), including serving as chair in 2017. He served as chair of the Council Effectiveness Work Group in 2020. Stoops currently serves on APA's Council of Editors and the Advocacy Coordinating Committee. At the same time, he is serving a second term on the Council of Representatives as representative for Div. 28, Psychopharmacology and Substance Abuse.
Stoops is always kind, inclusive, energetic, focused, rational. He is a superb listener as well as an accomplished leader who gets things done. We can rely on him to complete projects in a comprehensive, yet timely manner. For his brilliant research, multi-dimensional leadership, his positive, enthusiastic demeanor, I, Sandra L.
