We are writing this message to remind you of two important deadlines that are rapidly approaching for scientific programming at the 2014 APA Annual Convention in Washington DC on August 7-10, 2014.
The first deadline is for cross-cutting, integrative programming across the different divisions of APA to highlight the unifying nature of psychology as a
discipline. If you have an idea for a draft of collaborative programming between
Division 28 and any other Divisions, the symposia, workshops, or panel discussion drafts are due by Friday, November 1, 2013.
The second deadline is for Divisional 28 Programming for Psychopharmacology (symposia, skill-building sessions, posters, papers, and panel discussions) and is Monday, December 2, 2013. Importantly, if a proposal is not accepted for the Collaborative Programming initiative (deadline, Friday, November 1, 2013), Division 28 can still consider your submission via the traditional division programming process. (deadline, Monday, December 2).
The call for Collaborative Programming and/or regular Divisional Programming and online submission of your symposia, paper, abstract, etc., can be found here: http://www.apa.org/convention/proposals.aspx.
If you have any questions, comments, or topics you would like to see at the 2014 Annual convention, please email either myself (ellen.walker@temple.edu) or Rich Allen (Richard.Allen@ucdenver.edu).
Looking forward to seeing you in Washington, DC next summer!
Ellen Walker, President Elect
Richard Allen, 2014 Programming Chair

A top F.D.A. official, Dr. Douglas Throckmorton, said Zohydro would give doctors another drug to treat long-term pain. But Representative Harold Rogers, Republican of Kentucky, said on Friday that top F.D.A. officials had recently assured him they would only approve new opioids like Zohydro if they were marketed in formulations intended to deter abuse. OxyContin is now formulated that way, but Zohydro, which is contains hydrocodone without acetaminophen, is not. Its producer, Zogenix, says it will closely monitor use of the drug.
"It is like the original OxyContin, so that is real problematical," Mr. Rogers said.
Resuming Extramural Activities after the 2013
Government Shutdown
Important information on revised receipt and review schedules: OER has developed a public website that consolidates the information on the resumption of extramural activities after the shutdown. Please see the notices on this page for detailed information. Standard as well as special October receipt dates have been extended with few exceptions. Applicants who have already submitted applications for FOAs given extended receipt dates will be allowed to refresh their applications. Most NIH peer review meetings that occurred during or immediately following the government shutdown will be rescheduled so that as many applications as possible are able to be considered at January 2014 Council meetings.
Tobacco Regulatory Science Program (TRSP) Career Awards: Applications for the NIH four career award announcements that will be administered by NIH under the Tobacco Regulatory Science Program (TRSP) were originally due on October 2, 2013. Due to the resumption of extramural activities following the shutdown, the receipt date has been extended to November 1, 2013 (NOT-OD-14-003).

It is with much regret that we need to inform the scientific community that the Frontiers in Addiction Research Mini-convention, usually held as a satellite to the Society for Neuroscience Annual Meeting, will not take place this year. This is due to both a new conference approval process and the recent government shutdown. We apologize for the late notice and any inconvenience this has caused you. We hope that next year NIDA will be able to continue this very successful mini-convention

The BPRU is a major clinical and basic science research program in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the Johns Hopkins University (JHU) School of Medicine. Located on the Johns Hopkins Bayview campus, the program has focused on behavioral pharmacology and behavioral neuroscience research as these relate to drug abuse and dependence. It has also been the home for a highly successful postdoctoral training program in this field. The BPRU has been in existence for over 40 years, and is widely recognized for the high quality of its scientific productivity and contributions to the understanding of all classes of abused drugs as well as assessments of novel centrally acting compounds. The program consists of 10-12 full-time faculty, a number of affiliate faculty who work in other Johns Hopkins addictions programs, and support staff. It is supported primarily by NIH grants and pharmaceutical company contracts. Dr. George Bigelow, the BPRU's Scientific Director, has announced that he is stepping down from this position, and JHU is conducting a national search for a new director to lead the BPRU.
Potential candidates should be either at the rank of Professor at their current institution or qualified for appointment as a Professor in the JHU School of Medicine. Candidates are expected to have demonstrated a strong, multi-year record of independent funding as a Principal Investigator on NIH grants (or the equivalent), a record of international recognition for their work, as well as a record of exceptional leadership and mentoring. Candidates with research backgrounds in any areas of behavioral pharmacology and the addictions/substance abuse field (e.g., pharmacology, psychology, basic science, brain imaging, and clinical trials) are welcome to apply. Critical to the selection of the next leader of BPRU will be the ability to demonstrate a clear vision for the direction of behavioral pharmacology and addictions research per se and the role that the BPRU should play in leading such research at the national and international level.
Interested and qualified candidates should forward a copy of their curriculum vitae, along with a cover letter summarizing their experience and background. Applications should be sent to: Eric C. Strain, M.D., Chair BPRU SD Search Committee, c/o Barbara Cross, The Johns Hopkins Hospital, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, Meyer 131, 600 N. Wolfe Street, Baltimore, MD 21287 (bcross2@jhmi.edu).
Johns Hopkins University is an equal opportunity/affirmative action employer committed to recruiting, supporting, and fostering a diverse community of outstanding faculty, staff, and students. All applicants who share this goal are encouraged to apply.

Social and behavioral research is under attack right now and we need your help to defend it. Join us in telling Congress to vote AGAINST any amendments or bills that would threaten psychological grants or entire programs of psychological research. Urge Congress NOT to substitute political review for scientific peer review.
