Dear Colleagues:
Please take a moment to read this wonderful Huffington Post article, describing an event held on Capitol Hill last week in which scientists whose research had been targeted as 'wasteful' were able to tell their stories directly to U.S. Sen. Jeff Flake, one of the writers of the "Wastebook."
I wanted to be sure you know the leadership role APA played in this event. As co-chair of the Coalition to Promote Research, I along with Angela Sharpe of the Consortium of Social Science Associations were the primary planners of the event. Working with the coalition steering committee, we raised the funds for the event, identified the participants and managed all the logistics. Three psychologists were among the participants: Fred Muench of the Feinstein Institute for Medical Research, who is quoted in the article, Kim Phillips of Trinity University, and Karen Ingersoll of the University of Virginia. APA and COSSA have made it a major priority to defend research when it is subjected to political attacks. It makes me proud that our organization could help facilitate such important conversations between scientists and policymakers. This is why we advocate.
Several sister organizations were cosponsors or otherwise involved in the event and their contributions were key. Thanks to the Federation for Behavioral and Brain Sciences, American Educational Research Association, Society for Research in Child Development, and two scientific publishers: Elsevier and Sage.
