[#DIV28SUPER] Fw: Remembering Howie Rachlin

Dear Division 28 colleagues,

Those of you familiar with the literature on the behavioral economics of addiction know the intellectual debt we owe to Howard Rachlin, who recently passed. He was one of the giants in psychology and behavioral economics, and his seminal and ground-breaking work on behavioral choice has touched and shaped many careers and research paths, including in our field. As described below, Leonard Green, one of his graduate students and a major force in behavioral economics as well, is hosting a Zoom event to remember Howie at the May meeting of the Society for the Quantitative Analysis of Behavior. It's open to all, all you need to do is pre-register. Please pass this along to others who may want to be there.

[#DIV28SUPER] Subject: NIH Common Fund Funding Opportunities to Address Health Disparities and Advance Health Equity

Greetings,

Please forward to interested parties:

The NIH Common Fund has published two new Funding Opportunities to address Health Disparities and Advance Health Equity. The NIH has established a new initiative called UNITE to end structural racism and racial inequities throughout the biomedical research enterprise. Part of ending racial inequities in biomedical research will be to ensure NIH-supported research benefits the health of all populations, especially those whose health is negatively impacted by racism. For this reason, conducting new research into health disparities, minority health, and health equity is an important goal of UNITE.

As part of UNITE, the NIH Common Fund issued two funding opportunities announcements (FOAs) to bolster innovation, solve challenges, and address health disparities and advance health equity:

1) RFA-RM-21-021 Transformative Research to Address Health Disparities and Advance Health Equity (U01 Clinical Trial Allowed)

2) RFA-RM-21-022 Transformative Research to Address Health Disparities and Advance Health Equity at Minority Serving Institutions (U01 Clinical Trial Allowed)

The FOAs will support collaborative investigative teams or individual scientists who propose unusually innovative research projects, which, if successful, would have a major impact in developing, disseminating, or implementing innovative and effective interventions and/or strategies that prevent, reduce, or eliminate health disparities and inequities.  Research addressing community-prioritized research questions, cross-cutting issues such as social determinants of health across sectors, multiple levels and systems that contribute to health disparities, and/or priority areas of multiple NIH Institutes and Centers are particularly encouraged.

All applications are due on May 28, 2021 by 5:00 PM local time of applicant organization. If you have questions about the FOAs, please email CFHealthDisparities@nih.gov. We also encourage applicants to visit our Application Resources and Frequently Asked Questions. Visit the Transformative Research to Address Health Disparities and Advance Health Equity website for more information, and please sign up for our listserv: CFHealthDisparitiesResearch-List.

Pre-application webinar

On April 27, 2021 at 10:30 am-12:30 pm Eastern Time (ET), the NIH Common Fund will host a pre-application webinar. NIH program, grants management, and review staff will discuss the overall scope and intent of these funding opportunities, review process, and the use of the cooperative agreement (U01) mechanism. NIH will not provide comments on specific ideas or plans for individual research applications during the webinar.

Pre-registration is required to participate in the webinar; please pre-register at https://nih.webex.com/nih/onstage/g.php?MTID=ed399e44b46ab5d15bd6b02a08d47b17f. Participants are asked to submit their questions in advance to CFHealthDisparities@mail.nih.gov by 5:00 pm ET on April 23, 2021 to be considered for inclusion in the webinar. Please note, due to time constraints, questions that are not submitted in advance may not be addressed during the webinar.

Participation in the webinar is optional. After the webinar, webinar slides and a recording will be posted on the Transformative Research to Address Health Disparities and Advance Health Equity website.

[#DIV28SUPER] Tenure-track faculty position, University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC)

Greetings colleagues,

Please see attached and below information about a tenure-track faculty position in the Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior at the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC). For questions, please contact Donna M. Platt, Ph.D. (dplatt@umc.edu), Division Director, Division of Neurobiology and Behavior Research, Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior, University of Mississippi Medical Center.

---

The Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior at the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC), located in Jackson, Mississippi, invites applicants to apply for a tenure-track faculty position in our dynamic Department. This position is available at all ranks (Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, and Professor)within the Department's Division of Neurobiology and Behavior Research (DNBR), and the faculty member will be expected to devote their primary focus to research activities. Applicants must have a doctoral degree in neuroscience, psychology, pharmacology, or related fields, and postdoctoral experience. The salary and benefits package is comparable to national expectations (https://umc.edu/HR/files/files1/Benefits-at-a-Glance.pdf). In addition, a competitive research/relocation start-up package will be available to the applicant, with excellent opportunities for intramural support in terms of bridge funds, merit-based awards, and enhancement funding. Review of applicants will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled.

We are seeking individuals to expand and complement current strengths in areas of substance use disorders, mood disorders, and psychiatric comorbidities. In particular, we are interested in receiving applications from researchers who combine cellular/molecular and/or circuit-based techniques with rigorous behavioral research in animal model systems, or individuals conducting behavioral pharmacology and/or neuroscience research using human subjects. The candidate will be expected to maintain a vibrant, extramurally funded, research program. A track record of funding and/or current funding is a major consideration.

The Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior includes the divisions of Adult Psychiatry, Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Sleep Medicine, Psychology, and the DNBR, and is home to the newly established Center for Innovation and Discovery in Addictions (CIDA). The DNBR is the preclinical research arm of the Department, and it consists of twelve scientists with expertise in genetics/genomics, cellular/anatomical sciences, behavioral pharmacology/neuroscience, and drug discovery and development. The Division provides a strong collaborative and supportive work environment, and it is housed in the Translational Research Center, a newly-constructed building (2018) with state-of-the-art laboratory, animal vivarium, and administrative space. Many faculty members in the DNBR contribute to graduate training within UMMC's Program in Neuroscience, so opportunities for doctoral mentoring of graduate students are available. Similar opportunities are available for medical student/resident research and education. Leadership and faculty development opportunities are encouraged and supported across all academic missions.

Jackson is the capitol city of Mississippi, a state with a rich cultural history that has greatly influenced the music, literature, and art of the rest of the country. It lies at a midpoint between Memphis and New Orleans, each of which is an easy three-hour drive, and Atlanta and Dallas, each about seven hours away. Local recreation opportunities are abundant and the Gulf of Mexico is less than three hours to the south. Ethnic, music, and culinary festivals abound during pleasant spring and fall weather. The University of Mississippi Medical Center provides equal opportunity in any employment practice, education program, or education activity to all qualified persons. UMMC complies with all applicable laws regarding equal opportunity and affirmative action and does not discriminate against any employee or applicant for employment based upon race, color, gender, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, religion, national origin, age, disability, veteran status, or genetic information. For questions, please contact Donna M.
