[#DIV28M] apportionment ballot

Dear Division 28 Members-
By now, you should have received your apportionment ballot for APA council seats. There is a misconception that all divisions, regardless of how few apportionment votes they receive, will have at least 1 council seat. This is not true. If a division does not get enough apportionment votes, it is not guaranteed a council seat, but could receive a seat through the wildcard plan. I don't know about you, but I am unwilling to leave our council seat to a wildcard selection.
My message to you is to please allocate ALL 10 of your apportionment votes to Division 28 to ensure we maintain our council seat.
Thanks for your time and consideration.
-Bill.

[#DIV28SUPER] Special Issue of Experimental and Clinical Psychopharmacology

Call for Papers: Experimental and Clinical Psychopharmacology

Special Issue for August 2016 on:

50th Anniversary of APA Division 28: The Past, Present and Future of Psychopharmacology and Substance Abuse

Division 28 was formed in 1966 to provide a home within APA for psychologists interested in the behavioral effects of psychoactive or central nervous system drugs and chemicals.  Today, the Division's overarching mission is to encourage the advancement of knowledge on the behavioral effects of psychotropic drugs and toxicants, including (a) disseminating research-based information on psychopharmacology and substance abuse within APA, in educational settings, and to other scientists; (b) encouraging the application of the results of psychopharmacology research to human affairs; and (c) consideration of education and policy issues pertaining to psychopharmacology, behavioral toxicology, and substance abuse.

During 2016, we will celebrate the 50th anniversary of Division 28. The proposed special issue will highlight the scientific contributions and historical milestones of APA's Division 28 and its members.  We invite manuscripts on the important scientific, clinical and translational contributions of Division 28 members, as well as commentary on the future of psychopharmacology and substance abuse research. In addition, collaborative, research-based manuscripts that disseminate new data about psychotropic drugs and toxicants are especially encouraged. Such papers could include novel research findings about the behavioral pharmacology of emerging drugs of abuse or newly developed compounds in non-human animals or humans (see [a], above). Research-based papers could also present new information on how aspects of psychopharmacology or substance abuse impact human affairs (see [b], above). Scholarly reflections on the notable changes that have occurred in the areas of psychopharmacology and substance abuse, particularly pertaining to education and policy (see [c], above), during the five decades since the Division was founded are also welcome.

Authors may submit primary research reports, review articles or commentaries to Experimental and Clinical Psychopharmacology to be considered for inclusion in this special issue. Manuscripts should be submitted as usual through the APA Online Submission Portal (www.apa.org/pubs/journals/pha/), and the cover letter should indicate that the authors wish the manuscript to be considered for publication in the special issue on the 50th Anniversary of Division 28.  All submissions will undergo our normal peer review. Manuscripts received no later than March 1, 2016 will be considered for inclusion in the special issue. We strongly encourage individuals to contact us in advance with their ideas and ideally a draft title and abstract.

Questions or inquiries about the special issue can be directed to the Guest Editors of the issue, William W. Stoops, PhD, at william.stoops@uky.edu or Stacey C. Sigmon, PhD at stacey.sigmon@uvm.edu.  Correspondence can also be directed to the Editor, Suzette M. Evans, PhD at se18@cumc.columbia.edu.

Co-Occurring Substance Use and Mental Health Disorders

Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth

The Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth offers a unique postdoctoral training program in a developing area of transdisciplinary/translational research, co-occurring substance use and other mental disorders (COD) http://geiselmed.dartmouth.edu/scd/The philosophy of this program asserts that to effectively impact the problems of addiction and mental illness, one must be fully aware of their co-existence, etiologies, phenomenology, and clinical manifestations. Moreover, knowledge of integrated clinical approaches and the healthcare systems that serve those with co-occurring disorders are necessary to inform the questions to be asked in laboratory, animal and human imaging and clinical research studies. At Dartmouth, six interconnected groups from neuroscience through implementation research, and across multiple departments provide research opportunities in social, behavioral, neurobiological mechanisms, treatment development (psychosocial and pharmacological), technology-assisted treatment and dissemination, and health services  and implementation. Faculty include preeminent national/international leaders in COD research, MD and PhD investigators with strong histories of training scientists, and a team of support faculty committed to establishing a structured training program in COD. Research teams include neuroscientists, psychopharmacologists, behavioral health technologists, clinical trials and contingency management experts, health services researchers, anthropologists, statisticians, economists, and clinicians. [#DIV28SUPER] Faculty Position in Health Disparities at Auburn University

Attached is an ad for an Associate/Assistant Professor position in Psychology at Auburn University in Health Disparities. The area is broadly defined but investigators interested in disparities in prevention, diagnosis or treatment of behavioral disorders are encouraged to apply.

The position in Psychology is one of several being advertised under a cluster-hire initiative  originated and supported by the Provost. The goals for this cluster are to improve population health by identifying, understanding, and addressing health needs and disparities. A special focus is on disadvantaged segments of the population, which are often underserved by existing health care systems due to historically unequal treatment or injustice.

We will recruit faculty in Psychology (this ad), Pharmacy, Nursing, Human Development and Family Studies, and Nutrition.  A key component of this position is the opportunity to collaborate with others on campus interested in health disparities and to help form strategic research programs in this area.

Additional information can be found at http://www.auburn.edu/academic/provost/healthdisparities.html .

Please feel free to forward this to interested colleagues and do not hesitate to contact me (newlamc@auburn.edu) with any questions.

[#DIV28SUPER] Fwd: [DIVOFFICERS] Message from APA concerning federal criminal justice reform in Congress

---------- Forwarded message ----------
...

Below please find information to take action on a pending federal criminal justice issue. The U.S. House and Senate both are working on sentencing and corrections reform, and APA has asked its membership to contact House Judiciary Committee members in support of a provision related to mental and behavioral health. Please note, you will only be able to take action if you live in the district of a Judiciary Committee member, a list of whom is pasted below. You also can enter your contact information into the alert to find out if you live in one of these districts.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Micah Haskell-Hoehl in APA's Public Interest Government Relations Office at 202.336.5935 or mhaskell-hoeh@apa.org. I hope you will consider taking part in this action.

Subject: You Live in a Key Congressional District; We Need Your Help!

Take Action: Please Contact Your House Member about Mandatory Minimums!

The U.S. House and Senate are working hard to reform federal corrections and sentencing—efforts APA strongly supports. Please urge the House Judiciary Committee to approve an important provision in the Safe, Accountable, Fair, and Effective (SAFE) Justice Act of 2015, H.R. 2944, on mandatory minimum sentences.

Currently, Congress is considering three different criminal justice reform bills. They all seek to make a number of important changes to existing law that will improve public safety, reduce the number of Americans serving prison time, and save tax dollars currently going toward incarceration. Each bill also includes provisions to broaden the existing safety valve. The safety valve gives discretion to a court to provide a sentence shorter than the mandatory minimum. However, it applies only under a narrow set of circumstances related to the offender and type of offense.

Unique to H.R. 2944 are provisions that would allow judges to use their discretion in deciding a sentence, after considering whether mental health needs, addiction, trauma, or victimization played a role in the offense. The other bills under consideration use only criminal history to include or exclude drug offenders from safety valve relief eligibility. H.R. 2944 provides an avenue for those individuals with the greatest level of mental and behavioral health need to receive sentences commensurate with the offense and treatment for the factors underlying their criminal behavior. This language would not allow offenders to escape accountability for their actions, but it would provide judges discretion to consider individual sentences in additional, specific cases. This represents not only a sensible criminal justice tool, but also another potential means for system efficiency and tax dollar savings.

Please contact your Representative! Take Action now!
