[#DIV28SUPER] New Postdoctoral Position at the Health Promotion Research Center

Sharing this job opportunity for a colleague:

Post-Doctoral Fellowship

The newly renamed Health Promotion Research Center (HPRC; formerly the Oklahoma Tobacco Research Center) of the NCI Designated Stephenson Cancer Center (SCC) at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center (OUHSC) is seeking applications for one (1) postdoctoral research fellow (2-3 year appointment) who aspires to become an independent academic researcher in the areas of mobile health (mHealth), tobacco cessation, cancer prevention, and health disparities.

The fellow will primarily work with Dr. Michael Businelle on multiple completed and ongoing research studies that utilize smartphones and sensors (e.g., mobile carbon monoxide monitor, GPS) to collect data and automatically intervene to reduce unhealthy behaviors (e.g., smoking, at-risk drinking) in real-time (see recent studies at https://www.businellelab.com/). Dr. Businelle is the Co-director of the HPRC and Director of the SCC mHealth Shared Resource. View information about the HPRC, the training program, and the mHealth resource here: https://otrc.stephensoncancercenter.org/).

The fellow will receive training in developing and testing automated smartphone based Just-in-Time Adaptive Interventions (JITAI) using our InsightTM mHealth Platform. InsightTM enables researchers to rapidly (i.e., within 1-2 weeks) create smartphone-based research studies that may include ecological momentary assessments and sensor data (i.e., activity monitor, mobile carbon monoxide monitor) to identify environmental, cognitive, affective, physiological, and behavioral antecedents of health risk behaviors and deliver context-specific adaptive interventions in real-time. The mHealth resource is currently staffed by 7 computer scientists/engineers and 4 additional staff members. To date, the mHealth resource has supported approximately 50 studies worth over $30 million in total costs including 25 studies that were funded by the NIH.

The fellow will be highly involved in manuscript preparation (primary and secondary roles) using data from multiple completed and ongoing JITAIs that address smoking (i.e., Smart-T2, Smart-T3, Phoenix), alcohol use (i.e., Smart-T Alcohol), case management (i.e., Link2Care), anxiety/depression in cancer patients (i.e., Persist), and COVID-19 (i.e., Symptom Tracker). The fellow will also receive training in novel quantitative and statistical approaches such as multi-level modeling and structural equation modeling, training in grant writing and preparation, conducting clinical trials, and mobile health research methods (see more here: https://otrc.stephensoncancercenter.org/Training).

Qualifications include a doctoral degree in the behavioral sciences, public health, psychology, or other relevant area. Fellow duties are highly focused on writing (e.g., papers, grant applications), thus excellent writing skills are required. Experience with diverse populations, tobacco research, health disparities, and quantitative methods are preferred but not required. Salary and benefits are excellent! In addition, fellows will have access to funds to conduct research, and attend external trainings and conferences.

Interested candidates should send a curriculum vitae and cover letter stating their research interests and career goals to Michael-Businelle@ouhsc.edu

Apply for the APAGS Convention Grant!

APAGS will award thirty graduate students a $125 grant to provide financial assistance to attend the APA 2020 virtual convention. Some examples of financial assistance include childcare, technology to increase internet speed, registration coverage, securing a quiet place to attend sessions, etc. This grant will support efforts to increase the membership and participation of graduate students at the virtual APA Convention.

Eligibility:

APAGS scholarships are available to graduate student members of APAGS who are enrolled at least halftime as a student in good standing at a regionally accredited university. If you are a student affiliate of the American Psychological Association (APA) and are in a masters or doctoral program, you are automatically a member of APAGS. Undergraduates are not eligible for these scholarships, nor are APAGS officers, subcommittee, or task force chairs. Priority for this grant will be given to applicants who personally identify as a student from an unrepresented group, are first-time attendees, or are presenting at this year's convention.

How to apply:

Please combine all of the following items into one PDF file and save the file as your last name followed by first name (e.g., "Smith Jane.pdf"). We will not accept Word documents.

Each application must include all of the following materials:

  • Letter of interest answering the following questions in no more than 250-500 words:
    • How does participating in the virtual convention align with your educational and professional goals?
    • How do you plan to use the funds, if awarded? Please answer this in a bullet-point format
    • How will you utilize the knowledge obtained at convention and apply it to your psychological community?
  • Proof of acceptance to present (if applicable) and payment of Convention registration fee.
  • Please submit materials via our submission portal

Requirements for Award Recipients:

Provide a 1-2 paragraph testimonial about your experience attending the virtual Convention, something interesting that you learned, or a discussion about a particular session you found interesting that may be used in a blog post (http://www.gradpsychblog.org/) or in other APAGS materials.

The deadline to apply is 12:00 PM EST, Friday, July 31st, 2020.

In collaboration with Mackenzie Lemieux - a Wikipedia wiz, future MD/PhD student at Washington University in St. Louis, and all-around great person - the Opioid Policy Institute is coordinating an Addiction Science Wikipedia Hackathon.

While as scientists we may spend a lot of time reading peer-reviewed journals, much of the web still relies on the knowledge provided by Wikipedia. Our goal with this event is to increase evidence-based information about addiction science on Wikipedia (citing peer-reviewed articles!), contribute edits that use person-centered language (let's take on stigma!), and promote the diversity represented in addiction science by creating Wiki pages (the Marian W Fischman Lectureship Award and the many illustrious awardees, to start!).

Our event will provide a walk-through on how to edit/use Wikipedia and identify pages that may need additional information.

All skill levels are welcome!

The time is drawing near – it's almost time for our Early Career Poster Session & Social Hour: Friday, August 7, 4:00-6:00pm EST!  This event is hosted by Division 50 and 28, funded by NIAAA and NIDA, and done in collaboration with Divisions 38, 5 and 25.

As you know, this event has been happening at the annual convention of the APA for the past 13+ year.  This year for the first time we are holding it as a 2-hr virtual session.  I invite you all join us to celebrate our selected awardees, and to get together to share science and connect during these turbulent times.

To this end, I wanted to share three things with you:
Pre-registration is not required, but by completing this short form, you make it easier for us to get in touch with you if we experience any technological glitches.  It also helps us track the reach of this event.
We are still uploading posters as we are getting them, but with some luck we'll have all posters ready for your perusal by the end of the week.

I very much hope you'll be able to join us for this important networking and substance use science event.  There is no registration cost, and no requirements for APA registration.  Everyone is welcome.  I hope to see you, your mentors, mentees, colleagues and friends there!

All the best,

Bettina
