This JAX short course brings together world-renowned experts in addiction, human genetics, and mouse genetics. Through a combination of lectures and hands-on computational modules, the course will feature:

 

·         New methods and applications of mouse genetics to addiction,

·         Genetic and bioinformatics approaches to augment behavioral studies, and

·         Techniques for analyzing human genetic studies of addiction.

 

This course is supported by a grant from the National Institutes on Drug Abuse under Award Number R13DA032192.

II.                  The NIH Big Data to Knowledge initiative (BD2K, https://datascience.nih.gov/bd2k) announces the release of two new RFAs for training in biomedical big data science:

RFA-MD-16-002 NIH Big Data to Knowledge (BD2K) Enhancing Diversity in Biomedical Data Science (R25)

RFA-ES-16-011 BD2K Research Education Curriculum Development: Data Science Overview for Biomedical Scientists (R25)

The receipt deadline for applications for the Diversity FOA is November 12, 2016 and for the Curriculum Development FOA is December 7, 2016.

BD2K is a trans-NIH initiative that aims to support advances in data science, other quantitative sciences, policy, and training that are needed for the effective use of big data in biomedical

research. Interested applicants are encouraged to join the BD2K listserv (https://list.nih.gov/cgi-bin/wa.exe?SUBED1=bd2kupdates&A=1) to receive the most up-to- date information about BD2K events and funding opportunities.

III.                2016 Frontiers in Addiction Research Mini-Convention- "Relapse and Recovery: from Mechanistic Understanding to Translational Research"   San Diego Convention Center, Room 7AB, 8:30 AM to 5:30 PM, Friday November 11, 2016  http://apps1.seiservices.com/nida-niaaa/frontiers2016/Default.aspx

The theme of this year’s mini-convention is on relapse and recovery, with an emphasis on integration of preclinical and clinical research and leveraging insights from big data approaches. The symposium will highlight notable studies in drug and alcohol research, in areas ranging from molecular mechanisms to treatment in clinical populations.

IV.                NIDA Diversity Scholars Travel Award for the Annual Society for Neuroscience (SfN) Meeting on November 12-16, 2016 in San Diego, California.  As part of this award, recipients will also be able to attend the Frontiers in Addiction Research NIDA-NIAAA Mini-Convention held prior to SfN on November 11, 2016.

 

Application Deadline:  Wednesday, September 14, 2016 (midnight)

Award Announcement:  September 30, 2016

 

The NIDA ODHD anticipates supporting approximately 10 awards in the amount of $1,000 each to help defray the costs of attend SfN.

 

Underrepresented NIDA-supported NRSA fellows, NRSA T32 trainees, DIDARP trainees, Diversity Supplement recipients, and other NIDA funded trainees are encouraged to apply.

 

Application Information:

Applicants should submit the following information in Word format as an email attachment by midnight on September 14, 2016 to Julie Huffman at huffmanj@mail.nih.gov.

 

1.  Complete contact information:  name, degrees, title, e-mail, mailing address, telephone number, institution, and mentor’s name, current funding source;

2.  Cover letter (1 page) indicating your eligibility and interest in pursuing substance abuse research, and how attending this conference will advance your long-term career goals in research and education;

3.  Research Project Description (2 page max.):  title, abstract, and research findings of current research project;

4.  Academic curriculum vita, including publications;

5.  Indicate if you submitted an abstract or will be presenting at the 2016 SfN meeting.
