Subject: [DIVOFFICERS] Message from CARE re: Gluck editorial in NYT
Posting on behalf of Dr. John Capitanio, Chair of the APA Committee on Animal Research and Ethics (CARE)
Dear Division Officers,
I'd like to introduce myself, I am John Capitanio, Chair of the APA Committee on Animal Research and Ethics (CARE).
It has come to my attention that there has been some discussion among Division officers about Dr. John Gluck's recent Op-Ed in the New York Times. CARE members are aware of Dr. Gluck's editorial, and also familiar with his past history as a nonhuman primate researcher and his later efforts promulgating all research with nonhuman animals as inherently unethical. The Committee is dedicated to promoting meaningful, evidence-based, and civil dialog on issues pertaining to research with nonhuman animals. We also believe it is important to inform the public about the ethical and regulatory framework that undergirds such research. To this end, members of CARE, in association with many non-CARE members, drafted a statement addressing the issues that Dr. Gluck raised. This statement, which has been signed by more than 90 scientists (many of whom are APA members), is currently under consideration by the New York Times. Division officers, however, can view this statement at:
