[DIV28SUPER] Comments due to FDA August 8th on proposed deeming rule to extend regulatory authority over tobacco

Dear Colleagues,

 

The Center for Tobacco Free Kids has created this microsite to make it easier for individuals to submit comments regarding FDA’s extension of jurisdiction to various tobacco products.  The comment period closes August 8^th.

 

Background:

On April 25, 2014, FDA published a proposed regulation extending its jurisdiction to various “deemed” tobacco products, including electronic cigarettes. If made final, the proposal would subject deemed products to a number of significant regulations that would apply automatically by virtue of a product being “deemed.”2 It also would subject the deemed products to several additional regulations which FDA has discretion to impose, including (1) requirement for a minimum age for sale, (2) health warnings for product packages and advertisements, and (3) prohibition of vending machine sales.  

 

Please also find attached a “key issues” document constructed by Tobacco Free Kids that is relevant to the deeming proposal.

Don't miss this year's invigorating keynote address by Jane Pauley, broadcast journalist and best-selling author. At the age of 50, Pauley was diagnosed with bipolar depression. This diagnosis spurred The New York Times bestseller "Skywriting: A Life Out of the Blue." The 2014 APA Award for Outstanding Lifetime Contributions to Psychology will be presented to Beverly Daniel Tatum, PhD, for her work on the psychology of racism in higher education. Tatum is an author, educator and administrator who is currently serving as the president of Spelman College. As a clinical psychologist, she has published a number of best-selling books examining race relations in education and received the Brock International Prize in Education in 2005.

Science Suite Grant Writing Workshop: How to Apply for the NRSA 6:30-8:30 p.m., Science Directorate Hospitality Suite, Marriott Marquis Hotel This workshop will be primarily for graduate students who are in their dissertation research stage or seeking a postdoctoral position. The workshop will walk through the NIH National Research Service Award (NRSA) application. The NRSA is awarded as both predoctoral and postdoctoral fellowships. The workshop will cover both the predoctoral and postdoctoral applications and will consist of three speakers who will describe the application process and discuss what a successful application looks like. Hi all,

Our Division 28 Program Chair Rich Allen and I thought it would be a good idea to send out the attached program for Division 25 (Behavior Analysis), which many in our division may be interested in.  Note that the program for Division 50 (Addiction) is included within the NIDA/NIAAA brochure that Rich previously sent.

There are several events within Division 25 programming that are related to psychopharmacology, including research on environmental determinants of alcohol consumption, acute effects of drugs on decision making, and analyses of non-drug reinforcers and addictions.

Psychology of Addictive Behaviors

Special section on:
Marijuana Legalization: Emerging Research on Use, Health, and Treatment


Marijuana policies in the US are shifting towards medicalization and
legalization, and as a result prevalence rates and health consequences may
increase. Research on the potential effects of this drug is critical to inform
the public health debate.

Psychology of Addictive Behaviors is seeking empirical (research, both original
and meta-analyses) and theoretical (review) papers examining trends in
marijuana use and use disorders and clinically-related research on the drug's
addictive potential and health effects. The special section's aim is to profile
emerging theory and research on marijuana in the areas of epidemiology,
physiological, cognitive, and mental health, and treatment.

Manuscripts should be submitted as usual through the APA Online Submission
Portal (http://www.apa.org/pubs/journals/adb/). The cover letter should
indicate that the authors wish the manuscript to be considered for publication
in the special section on Marijuana Legalization: Emerging Research on Use,
Health, and Treatment. All submissions will be peer-reviewed and must
adhere to usual journal requirements. The deadline for consideration for the
special issue is January 15, 2015.

Call for Papers: Psychology of Addictive Behaviors

Special Issue on
Neuroimaging and Psychotherapy Mechanisms of Change for Addictive
Behaviors

Translational research that increases understanding of brain mechanisms
underlying effective psychosocial interventions is critical to enhancing
treatment effects. Psychology of Addictive Behaviors is seeking both empirical
(research) as well as theoretical (review) papers examining potential brain
mechanisms that may underlie effective behavioral interventions for addictive
behaviors, broadly defined (e.g., alcohol, cocaine, tobacco, eating disorders,
obesity, pathological gambling) and across development (e.g., adolescents,

This course emphasizes genetic applications and approaches to drug addiction research through methodological instruction based on literature, data sets and informatics resources drawn from studies of addiction related phenotypes. The course includes plenary sessions on major progress in addiction genetics, and discussion sessions in which students present their work for discussion on applications of genetic methods. Students will leave the course able to design and interpret genetic and genomic studies of addiction as they relate to their specific research question, and will be able to make use of current bioinformatics resources to identify research resources and make use of public data sources in their own research.

Capitalizing on Behavioral Economics to Address Major Behavior Health Problems

Personal behavior patterns (i.e., lifestyle) increase risk for chronic
disease and premature death. Unhealthy behaviors (e.g., physical
inactivity/unhealthy food choices, tobacco use, prescription opioid
abuse) represent the leading cause of chronic disease and premature
deaths in the U.S. and are a major driver behind spiraling health-care
costs. These risk behaviors are overrepresented among
socioeconomically disadvantaged populations and are major contributors
to the problem of health disparities. Scholars from leading U.S.
universities and medical centers will share their research and
knowledge on how to apply the concepts and methods of behavioral
economics to improve scientific understanding and clinical outcomes
with these highly challenging and costly public health problems in the
areas of obesity, tobacco use, and prescription opioid abuse.

Comorbidity: Substance Use Disorders and Other Psychiatric Conditions

 

A NEW National Institute of Drug Abuse (NIDA) funded Post Doctoral Training Program has been established at the University of Minnesota. This program is a NIDA-funded T32 focused on the comorbidity of substance use disorder (SUD) with psychiatric disorders. The Department of Psychiatry (Medical School) leads the program, collaborating with the Department of Biobehavioral Health and Population Sciences (Medical School) and the Department of Psychology—Clinical Science and Psychopathology Research Program (Graduate Studies).

 

We are dedicated to training exceptional early career scientists from diverse backgrounds who seek to conduct rigorous transdisciplinary scientific inquiry across a broad range of possible emphases, research environments, methods, and areas of focus. Emphasis is on Diagnostics, Intervention, and Prevention. Focus includes, but is not limited to SUD in relation to Anxiety, Trauma, Depression, Neurocognitive, Psychotic, Eating Disorders, and associated medical conditions.

 

A distinct emphasis of the Post Doctoral Training Program is to diversify the biomedical, behavioral, clinical, and social sciences workforce through increased participation of talented individuals from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups; individuals with disabilities; and individuals from economically, socially, culturally, or educationally disadvantaged backgrounds. Ongoing affiliated research programs include specialized focus on adolescents, women's health, and minority and underserved populations including rural, Indigenous/Native Americans, Hmong, and Somali. Our programs are dedicated to working collaboratively with marginalized communities to address health issues. Specialized resources include the Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute, which includes the Office of Translation and Discovery, Clinical Research Services, the Center for Health Equity, and the Office of Community Engagement, along with the Powell Center for Women's Health, Center for Magnetic Resonance Research, Center for Rural Mental Health Studies, and Research for Indigenous Community Health Center (RICH).

 

Trainees will have a mentoring team consisting of a Primary Mentor and Specialty Mentors. Mentor teams will be drawn from the Twin Cities and Duluth campuses, facilitated by frequent cross campus contacts and regular videoconferencing. Trainees will complete didactic work as needed, establish research in collaboration with mentors, engage with trainees in other Residency and Post Doctoral programs, and can be based at either campus. Efforts are directed towards developing transdisciplinary expertise through an intensive program of dedicated scientific mentoring and focused professional development through personalized support and guidance. The second year of this two-year program includes NIH application development/submission.

 

Successful applicants will have MD or PhD degrees, appropriate research experience in medicine, neuroscience, psychology or closely allied disciplines.
