George F. Koob, Ph.D., has been named Director of the NIH's National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism. He is expected to join the NIH in January 2014. Dr. Koob is currently at the Scripps Research Institute, California Campus, where he is Chairman, Committee on the Neurobiology of Addictive Disorders, and Director, Alcohol Research Center. Kenneth R. Warren, Ph.D., has been serving as acting director of NIAAA since 2008, when Dr. Ting-Kai Li stepped down.
