Application due date

December 11, 2013, by 5:00 p.m. local time of applicant organization

Purpose

This OppNet RFA invites applications for short-term mentored career enhancement awards in basic behavioral and social sciences research (b-BSSR) to support development of research capability in b-BSSR with specific emphasis on cross-training and establishing collaborations between researchers with expertise in animal models of basic behavioral and social processes and those studying similar or related processes in human subjects.  Basic research using any non-human species or with human subjects in laboratory- or field-based settings is appropriate for this RFA.  OppNet intends to commit $1 million in Fiscal Year 2014 to support an estimated 10 awards.

Eligible candidates may be at any rank or level of research/academic development beyond three years of postdoctoral experience, and either,

·         Scientists conducting b-BSSR in animal models who seek training in the study of similar or related behavioral or social processes in humans, or,

·         Investigators conducting b-BSSR in human subjects who seek training in the study of similar or related processes in animal models.

OppNet strongly recommends that candidates review the set of Frequently Asked Questions and Answers (FAQs) created expressly for this RFA.

II.    Request for Information (RFI): Training Needs in Response to Big Data to Knowledge (BD2K) Initiativehttp://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/notice-files/NOT-HG-13-003.html

Response requested by March 15, 2013

NIH is currently developing a series of strategies for optimizing the use and management of Big Data, known as the BD2K (Big Data to Knowledge) initiative.  Among the needs identified is training of the biomedical workforce, at all levels.  To that end, NIH has issued a Request for Information (RFI) seeking input on the following: (a) types of training needed by people who work with biomedical data; (b) examples of programs or strategies for cross-training scientists from various backgrounds, at all career levels; (c) feedback about how best to evaluate workforce skills and knowledge; and (d) ideas about how to develop a diverse research workforce.  We encourage you to respond to this RFI, which is open until March 15, 2013: http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/notice-files/NOT-HG-13-003.html

For more information, please take a look at "Rock Talk"—a blog written by Dr. Sally Rockey (NIH's Deputy Director for Extramural Research) on this topic:  http://nexus.od.nih.gov/all/2013/02/28/big-data-and-the-biomedical-workforce-nih-wants-your-input/.

III.   Request for Information (RFI): Research Needs to Facilitate Broad Community Use of the Roadmap Epigenomics Program Data Resource

The Common Fund/Office of Strategic Coordination

We wanted to draw to your attention the recently published RFI on "Research Needs to Facilitate Broad Community Use of the Roadmap Epigenomics Program Data Resource."

The purpose of this RFI is to solicit feedback from the scientific community in an effort to identify the highest priority areas to pursue to facilitate broad use of the public data resource developed by the Roadmap Epigenomics Program, funded as part of the NIH Common Fund.  We are particularly interested in the areas of data presentation and accessibility, data analysis, and integration of epigenomics data sets with other public or user-generated datasets.  We are very interested in your thoughts and ideas on this topic so please take the time to respond.
