Dear Division Members:

Please excuse any duplicate postings.

Division 18 has a new Section on Serious Mental Illness and Severe Emotional Disturbance and we are encouraging all those with an interest in training, research, practice and advocacy with this population to become a member of the Section and of Division 18. The goals of the Section include:

·         Promoting integration of a recovery focus for those with SMI/SED population

·         Promoting novel and best practices for people with SMI/SED

·         Promoting research and awareness of research for people with SMI/SED

·         Developing specialized training for psychologists to work with people with SMI/SED

·         Serving as a forum for advocacy-related issues to foster practice and policy change

These goals are of particular importance in light of the recent negative attention to violence by people with SMI disorders and the need to advocate for appropriate treatment and for public information that conveys accurate information.

Benefits of membership in the Section include a forum for exchanging information via the Section listserv, updates on the latest related research, networking opportunities, and an opportunity to work on projects related to fostering the above goals.

Please feel free to contact Bruce Graunke (bruce.graunke@va.gov) or Mary Jansen (mjansen@bayviewbehavioral.org) for information and/or to join.  We want to work with all those interested in working on behalf of individuals with serious mental illnesses and severe emotional disturbances.

Thanks and we look forward to hearing from you!
