Dear science-oriented graduate students,

The American Psychological Association Science Student Council would like to encourage science-oriented graduate students to attend an informal mentorship event during this year's APA Convention in Washington, DC.  Sponsored by the Board of Scientific Affairs, this social hour is a valuable opportunity for students who are interested in a research career to receive professional advice and guidance from accomplished scientists in their area of research.  No preregistration is necessary.

The event will be held on Friday, August 5, 12-12:50pm, in the Grand Ballroom North of the Renaissance Hotel, 999 Ninth Street NW, Washington, DC.  This hotel is across Mt Vernon Square from the south (Mt Vernon Place) entrance of the Convention Center.  To get there, walk across Mt Vernon Square toward the right-hand side.  The hotel is at the corner of K Street & 9th Street NW.

Students will first meet in small groups of 7 students at a time with a scientist in their specific research area, followed by time to interact with all scientists in attendance. The following scientists will serve as mentors for the selected research areas:

Biopsychology/Behavioral Neuroscience: Charles T. Snowdon (University of Wisconsin)

Developmental/Cognitive: Kathryn A. Hirsh-Pasek (Temple University)

Social: Susan T. Fiske (Princeton University)

Health: Kenneth Sher (University of Missouri)

Clinical: David H. Barlow (Boston University)

Clinical: June Tangney (George Mason University)

Industrial/Organizational and Quantitative/Measurement: Kristopher J. Preacher (University of Kansas)

In addition, other sessions that we have organized for science-oriented students are described in this article

http://www.apa.org/science/about/psa/2011/07/student-council.aspx   We look forward to seeing you in Washington, DC!

Sincerely,

-APA Science Student Council

[DIV28SUPER] Fwd: URGENT! Protect Psychological Science at NSF

Please see below. Click the "Take Action!" link to advocate for the continued funding for the National Science Foundation. Please see the article in the most recent newsletter for the history of this bill and follow links to read more in the monthly SPIN newsletter.

URGENT! Action Alert to APA Members: Protect Psychological Science at NSF

Take Action!

July 22, 2011 - Email your U.S. Representative NOW

Background

Dear Colleague:

In recent months there have been attacks from Members of Congress on the value and legitimacy of the social and behavioral sciences, particularly research in these areas funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and its Directorate for Social, Behavioral & Economic Sciences (SBE).  One Senator has called for the elimination of the SBE Directorate.

The Commerce, Justice, Science appropriations bill, which funds NSF for Fiscal Year 2012, is slated to come up for a vote on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives during the first week of August, 2011.  It is likely that amendments will be offered that would substitute political review for peer review by: removing funding for current, merit-reviewed individual NSF grants; eliminating the SBE Directorate entirely; and/or forcing "across-the-board" cuts to all federal agencies in the bill (including NSF) to fund other programs.

APA urges you to send a brief email to your U.S. Representative asking him or her to VOTE NO on any and all such amendments to the Commerce, Justice, Science appropriations bill.

Taking Action is Quick and Easy:

After providing your contact information, your email sent through this APA Action Alert will reach your U.S. Representative's office.

Thank you for joining your APA colleagues in weighing in on this important vote.  If you have any questions, please contact Dr. Heather Kelly in the APA Science Government Relations Office at hkelly@apa.org.

Act Now to Protect SBE Funding!

Over the next several weeks, the U.S. House will vote on the appropriations bill that funds the National Science Foundation. Given recent attacks on SBE sciences by some members of Congress, amendments may be offered to the bill (at the full committee level or on the House floor) that eliminate or substantially reduce SBE funding.

Please contact your Representative to urge him or her to support funding for ALL sciences at NSF.

[DIV28M] Scientist Spotlight: July 2011

Hello,

Please enjoy this special July edition of the Scientist Spotlight!

Kelly and Sarah

-------------------------------------------

Scientist Spotlight is a monthly series that asks senior and mid-level scientists to provide information on how they choose to balance work and life responsibilities. This column is in response to an overwhelming request from Early Career Psychologists that more information (and assistance) in learning how to balance work and life be made available.  We are hopeful that by reading how different scientists balance work and life goals and responsibilities, graduate students and Early Career Psychologists will be better prepared to develop methods for being successful in science while still meeting personal life goals. Overall, we hope you find this series useful and enjoyable!

Please contact Kelly Dunn (kdunn9@jhmi.edu) or Sarah Tragesser (stragesser@tricity.wsu.edu) to nominate someone to be highlighted in this series.
