URGENT! Action Alert to APA Members: Protect Psychological Science at NSF

Take Action!

July 22, 2011 - Email your U.S. Representative NOW

Background

Dear Colleague:

In recent months there have been attacks from Members of Congress on the value and legitimacy of the social and behavioral sciences, particularly research in these areas funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and its Directorate for Social, Behavioral & Economic Sciences (SBE).  One Senator has called for the elimination of the SBE Directorate.

The Commerce, Justice, Science appropriations bill, which funds NSF for Fiscal Year 2012, is slated to come up for a vote on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives during the first week of August, 2011.  It is likely that amendments will be offered that would substitute political review for peer review by: removing funding for current, merit-reviewed individual NSF grants; eliminating the SBE Directorate entirely; and/or forcing "across-the-board" cuts to all federal agencies in the bill (including NSF) to fund other programs.

APA urges you to send a brief email to your U.S. Representative asking him or her to VOTE NO on any and all such amendments to the Commerce, Justice, Science appropriations bill.

Taking Action is Quick and Easy:

After providing your contact information, your email sent through this APA Action Alert will reach your U.S. Representative's office.

Thank you for joining your APA colleagues in weighing in on this important vote.  If you have any questions, please contact Dr. Heather Kelly in the APA Science Government Relations Office at hkelly@apa.org.
