NOT-OD-12-045 Request for Information (RFI): Input into the Scientific Strategic Plan for the proposed National Institute of Substance Use and Addiction Disorders

Through a Request for Information (RFI) the NIH is soliciting input into the Scientific Strategic Plan for the proposed new Institute with the working name of the National Institute of Substance Use and Addiction Disorders. Responders should note that the NIH is only seeking input on the scientific opportunities and public health needs that should be included in the Scientific Strategic Plan for the new Institute.  Input is sought on areas described in the RFI as well as any areas that NIH might consider.  For any of the areas identified in the RFI and any other specific areas you believe are worthy of consideration by NIH, please

 

(1)         identify the critical issues(s)

(2)         explain their effect(s) on the public, on scientists, or both; and

(3)         identify and explain which of the issues you identified are, in your opinion, the most important for NIH to address and why.

PAR-12-086 Cutting-Edge Basic Research Awards (CEBRA) (R21)

The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) Cutting-Edge Basic Research Award (CEBRA) is designed to foster highly innovative or conceptually creative research related to drug abuse and addiction and how to prevent and treat them. It supports research that is high-risk and potentially high-impact that is underrepresented or not included in NIDA's current portfolio. The proposed research should: (1) test a highly novel and significant hypothesis for which there are scant precedent or preliminary data and which, if confirmed, would have a substantial impact on current thinking; and/or (2) develop or adapt innovative techniques or methods for addiction research, or that have promising future applicability to drug abuse research.  Application due dates: August 20, 2012; December 20, 2012; August 20, 2013, December 20, 2013, August 20, 2014, and December 19, 2014 , by 5:00 PM local time of applicant organization.

 

 

Proposals Sought to Support Pain Management Education in Health Professional Schools
The NIH Pain Consortium is encouraging medical, dental, nursing and pharmacy schools to respond to a new funding opportunity to develop Centers of Excellence in Pain Education (CoEPEs). The National Institute on Drug Abuse is the lead Institute on this effort.  On December 30th, 2011, a Request for Proposals (RFP) was released by Altarum Institute and Palladian Partners, an Altarum company, on behalf of the NIH Pain Consortium, to develop and disseminate pain management curriculum resources for health care professionals and to provide leadership for change in pain management education. RFA-HD-12-211: Tools to Enhance Studies of Glial Cell Development, Aging, Disease and Repair (R21):

Discovery-based or high-risk applications that focus directly on tool development will be considered responsive to this announcement. Applicants can propose to develop tools or technologies for the study of any type of glial cell within the central or peripheral nervous systems. We are using the R21 grant mechanism that provides funding for 2 years at up to $275K direct costs total over the 2 year funding period.
