I.              CSHL Neuroscience of Addiction https://meetings.cshl.edu/courses.aspx?course=C-DRUG&year=23

August 9 - 15, 2023

Key Dates

Application Deadline:  April 24, 2023

Arrival: August 8th by 6pm EST

Departure: August 15th around 12pm EST

The primary objective of the proposed workshop is to provide an intense dialogue of the fundamentals, state-of-the-art advances and major gaps in the cell and molecular biology of drug addiction. Targeted to new or experienced investigators, the workshop will combine formal presentations and informal discussions to convey the merits and excitement of cellular and molecular approaches to drug addiction research. With the advent of genomics and proteomics, an extraordinary opportunity now exists to develop comprehensive models of neuroadaptative processes fundamental to addiction, withdrawal, craving, relapse to drug use and general brain function.

A range of disciplines and topics will be represented, including:

  • Noninvasive brain imaging to identify drug targets and adaptive processes
  • Neuroadaptative processes at the molecular and cellular level
  • Neural networks and their modulation
  • Relevance of genotype to susceptibility and drug response
  • Tolerance and adaptation at the cellular level
  • Approaches to exploiting the daunting volume generated by neuroinformatics

II.            Request for Applications (RFA): Revision Applications to Support Research on Prevention and Cessation of Menthol Cigarette Use in Populations that Experience Health Disparities (R01, Clinical Trial Optional) RFA-OD-23-015

The NIH Office of Disease Prevention (ODP), NIDA, and participating Institutes, Centers, and Offices are soliciting revision applications to active NIH grants through RFA-OD-23-015, Request for Applications (RFA): Revision Applications to Support Research on Prevention and Cessation of Menthol Cigarette Use in Populations that Experience Health Disparities (R01, Clinical Trial Optional).

We encourage all eligible grantees to apply.

This RFA is designed to help active NIH R01 grantees enhance their current smoking cessation and/or other prevention intervention studies by adding components focused on menthol cigarette smoking in populations that experience health disparities (racial and ethnic minority populations [American Indian or Alaska Native, Asian American, Black or African American, Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander, Latino or Hispanic], less privileged socioeconomic status populations, underserved rural populations, and sexual and gender minorities).

Parent awards that involve prospective testing of an intervention or intervention implementation strategy, intervention development, or pilot/feasibility testing are the most appropriate for this funding opportunity.

A one-time supplement of up to $150,000 direct costs may be requested. The application due date is June 19, 2023, by 5:00 p.m. local time of the applicant organization.

Refer to the full RFA in the NIH Guide (RFA-OD-23-015) for complete eligibility, application, and submission information. Please direct all inquiries to the scientific/research contacts listed in the funding opportunity

Innovations for Substance Use Disorders

Executive Education

Wednesday, April 19, 2023

12 - 1 p.m.

Presented by Johns Hopkins Carey Business School's Executive Education

Join us on Wednesday, April 19 from 12 - 1 p.m. Eastern time for an exciting webinar to learn about the newly launched Innovations for Substance Use Disorders (I4SUD) Executive Education course offered at Johns Hopkins Carey Business School. I4SUD is designed to help substance use disorder researchers move their ideas to market.

Discuss the difference between a scientific discovery and an innovation and how to develop an entrepreneurial mindset with Dr. Phil Phan and learn about our new program from Dr. Supriya Munshaw. A Q&A will follow presentations.

About the program

Innovations for Substance Use Disorders is a newly launched Executive Education certificate program for participants to work individually or in teams to assess if their ideas and inventions can be transformed into innovations to address problems in SUDs.

The virtual program features asynchronous and synchronous online activities; a multi-day visit to Carey's Baltimore - Inner Harbor location for workshops, clinical site visits, and community building. Live sessions and virtual mentoring will occur from August 28 - October 16, 2023. The in-person visit with expert panels, community building, SUD clinic visits, and a pitch competition will take place October 17 - October 20, 2023. All participants will have their airfare, meals, and accommodations covered by the sponsoring grant. The program is open to U.S.-based participants only.

[#DIV28SUPER] NIH RFI on "Pre-Addiction"

Dear Div 28 Members,

By way of this e-mail the Exec Comm wanted to make you aware of a NIH request for information (https://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/notice-files/NOT-DA-23-019.html) related to a recent publication that championed the idea of adopting use of the concept of "pre-addiction" for use in public health messaging related to substance use disorder.

The publication that proposed this can be found here: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/35793096/

This is an interesting idea and the RFI highlights many different important areas to consider in thinking this through.  Due to the complexity of this RFI, the Exec Committee of Division 28 has opted not to submit a response on behalf of the division, but rather encourage individual members to submit comments and ideas directly to NIH.  Division leadership will also be reviewing and commenting on draft language on the topic being drafted by APA based on input from multiple stakeholders.

Hope everyone is well and enjoying spring!
Regards,

-Ryan
