Subject: Extended Deadline: APF Walter Katkovsky Research Grants
To:

Up to $20,000 APF Walter Katkovsky Research Grants on the general topic of combining psychotherapy with a psychoactive substance that may be an over-the-counter or other legal substance or a prescription medication, where the substance is an adjunct to the psychotherapy and not the primary intervention.  Although determining the effectiveness of the psychoactive substance, whether it consists of a prescribed medication or other psychoactive substance and its dosage may be intrinsic to the research, the hypotheses to be tested in the research should not be on the psychoactive substance per se but rather on conditions that may be associated with decisions to introduce or discontinue the substance in the treatment plan and with the outcomes of combining these treatments.

Examples include but are not limited to the following:

  • Individual differences in patient variables that may favor or contraindicate combining psychotherapy and a psychoactive substance.
  • In-therapy variations in goals, structure, methods, theoretical orientation, therapist/patient interactions, and expected frequency and duration of meetings as they affect the appropriateness of combined treatments;
  • Research to establish recommendations on process variables on how best to introduce alternatives that may include changing or discontinuing a medication or another psychoactive substance;
  • Since the primary intervention in the proposal should be psychotherapy, and the intent of the Fund is not to test the effectiveness of prescription medications, a proposal that includes a comparison condition of a prescription medication without psychotherapy will not be funded. In contrast, a proposal involving a non-prescription substance may include a psychoactive substance alone vs. psychotherapy alone and/or a combined condition.

The proposal must describe in detail the experimental methodology (i.e., hypotheses, subject selection, and measures of independent and dependent variables, including a description of the psychotherapy that must deal with life problems and emotional/behavioral reactions) and result in the collection of new data.

Three $20,000 grants and three $10,000 grants are available.

This grant is open to psychologists with up to 12 years of post-doctoral experience.

The deadline for proposals is January 1, 2019.

[#DIV28SUPER] Postdoctoral Fellowship in Addiction Research, University of Southern California

Postdoctoral Fellowship in Addiction Research

University of Southern California

Health, Emotion, & Addiction Laboratory

Los Angeles, CA

The University of Southern California Health, Emotion, & Addiction Laboratory (USC-HEAL; heal.usc.edu) is recruiting 2-3 candidates for postdoctoral fellowship positions. Fellows will join a team of 4 PIs (Adam Leventhal, Matt Kirkpatrick, Raina Pang, Jessica Barrington-Trimis) carrying out laboratory, clinical, and population behavioral research on the causes, treatment, and prevention of addiction.  Recently completed and ongoing studies address vaping and cannabis use among youth and young adults, smoking cessation pharmacotherapy and counseling, sex differences in tobacco addiction, psychiatric-smoking comorbidity, ecological momentary assessment (EMA) of smoking and smoking cessation, pharmacological effects and appeal of e-cigarettes, genetic association studies of the effects of nicotine deprivation and stimulant administration on mood and behavior, and smoking in African American populations.  The fellowship will provide candidates with opportunities to lead and collaborate on data analyses and papers under the mentorship of the PIs.  Fellowships also provide training in building an independent research program, grant writing, and other career development activities.  Ideal candidates will have outstanding writing skills, excellent data analytic experience (preferably in longitudinal modeling, intensive repeated measures analysis for EMA data, or mixed models for complex factorial experiments), and an interest in pursuing a career in addiction research.

USC-HEAL is a dynamic, multi-disciplinary group of faculty, postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, and undergraduate scholars interested in the intersection of mental health, health behavior, and addiction. USC-HEAL is housed within USC Keck School of Medicine, Department of Preventive Medicine and the Institute for Health Promotion and Disease Prevention Research (IPR; ipr.usc.edu), which administers pre- and post-doctoral raining programs and an NIH/FDA-funded Tobacco Center of Regulatory Science.  USC-HEAL is also the hub of a new cross-campus initiative to develop the USC Institute for Addiction Science, which aims to promote interdisciplinary addiction science collaboration and education across public health, social work, psychology, policy, pharmacy, medicine, psychiatry, and other units.

Application review will begin November 28, 2018 and will continue until the position is filled.  Start date is flexible but should be no later than fall 2019.  To apply, please send a cover letter, statement of research interests, three paper reprints, and CV to: Adam Leventhal adam.leventhal@usc.edu.  Applicants should also arrange to have 3 letters of references sent directly to Dr. Leventhal. All materials should be sent via email.  Candidates are encouraged to contact Dr. Leventhal or other HEAL faculty PIs with questions.

Dear Colleagues,

The White House National Science and Technology Council (NSTC) is seeking public comment on the Draft Report of the Fast Track Action Committee (FTAC) on Health Science and Technology Response to the Opioid Crisis. Comments are requested by December 5, 2018 and may be submitted to OpioidsRoadmap@OSTP.eop.gov (link sends e-mail).

The NSTC chartered the Opioid FTAC to support the President’s response to the opioid crisis by identifying (1) research and development (R&D) critical to addressing key gaps in knowledge and tools, and (2) opportunities to improve coordination of Federal R&D essential to combating the opioid crisis.

The report, “Health Research and Development to Stem the Opioid Crisis: A National Roadmap,” describes and provides recommendations in seven research areas:

  1. Biology and Chemistry of Pain and Opioid Addiction
  2. Non-Biological Contributors to Opioid Addiction
  3. Pain Management
  4. Prevention of Opioid Addiction
  5. Treatment of Opioid Addiction and Withdrawal
  6. Overdose Prevention and Recovery
  7. Community Consequences of Opioid Addiction

The report is available here: https://www.nih.gov/draft-ftac. I encourage you to share it with your colleagues.

[#DIV28M] position announcement - Moffitt Cancer Center

See below for a position announcement at the Moffitt Cancer Center. Sorry for any cross-posting!

I’m excited to announce that the Department of Health Outcomes and Behavior (HOB) at Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa, Florida has an open faculty line, with tobacco research identified as a focus area for the search. Researchers at Moffitt’s Tobacco Research and Intervention Program (Tom Brandon, Dave Drobes, Vani Simmons, Dave Evans, and Christine Vinci) conduct human laboratory and applied/treatment studies on a wide range of topics.  The announcement follows:

Faculty Position (Open Rank) in Department of Health Outcomes and Behavior

Moffitt Cancer Center

The Department of Health Outcomes and Behavior (HOB) at Moffitt Cancer Center, a National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center on the campus of the University of South Florida, in Tampa, is seeking a faculty member (open rank) with research interests that complement or enhance our existing strengths in behavioral science and outcomes research.

The Department has 18 faculty engaged in research on tobacco use, cancer prevention and early detection, quality of life during and after cancer treatment, cancer-related health disparities, cancer caregivers, and health outcomes.  We welcome applicants with any relevant area of research, but we are particularly interested in expanding our research in (1) cancer care delivery or implementation science, to capitalize upon the resources available at the Center, and (2) tobacco research, to complement existing research in this area.

Resources for conducting research include the center’s integrated repository of clinical and research data on a large cohort of patients (Total Cancer Care® plus founding membership in the Oncology Research Information Exchange Network), diverse networks of community partners, a state-wide affiliate network of treatment providers, several research centers of excellence, and shared resources that include biostatistics, biomedical informatics, and survey methods.  Moreover, Moffitt is a leader in the development of clinical care pathways and innovative payment models that lend themselves to applied research.  Intra- and inter-disciplinary collaborations are encouraged and facilitated.

Successful candidates must hold a doctorate degree and have relevant research training and experience. We seek academic researchers who can contribute immediately, as evidenced by a history of peer-reviewed funding and publication.   Academic rank beyond that of Assistant Member/Assistant Professor will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.  The position is tenure-earning.  Salary and start-up funds are highly competitive.

Tampa was recently named an “urban gem” and the “Best City in the Southeast” by Money magazine.  Aside from the sunshine, beaches, and year-round outdoor recreation associated with the Gulf Coast of Florida, Tampa is a thriving metropolitan city with unique cultural attractions, low cost of living, and a high quality of life. Moffitt faculty members typically hold appointments in the Department of Oncologic Sciences or other departments at the university.  Moffitt-based faculty members focus their efforts on research, with minimal expectations for formal teaching.

Questions regarding the position should be directed to: David Drobes, Ph.D., Search Committee Chair, Department of Health Outcomes and Behavior (David.Drobes@moffitt.org).

To apply, visit our website Moffitt.org/Careers and refer to requisition number 29131 or click Health Outcomes and Behavior Faculty.  Review of applications will begin on February 1st and continue until position is filled.  Start date is flexible.
