Subject: [#DIV28SUPER] Congressional Briefing on Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome

Dear Colleagues,

I'm just sending a quick note to let the list know that Hendree Jones, PhD. was invited by Congressman Tim Ryan (D-13th, OH) to participate in a briefing on Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome last week organized by the Congressional Caucus on Addiction, Treatment and Recovery.  Hendree did a great job providing a big picture overview, explaining her NIDA-funded research, and the UNC Horizon's program which she directs.  That presentation complemented others by NIDA Deputy Director, Wilson Compton, M.D., SAMSHA's CSAT Medical Officer, Melinda Campopiano, M.D. and Arthur James, M.D., an OB/GYN from OSU (speaker bios are available here).  Caucus Co-Chair Tim Ryan provided opening remarks and Rep. Evan Jenkins (R-3rd, WV) was on hand throughout to discuss his bill, the "Nurturing and Supporting Healthy Babies Act".

The room was filled to capacity and the briefing continued to build momentum for the House to take action on its version of the Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act (CARA, S.524) passed by the Senate on March 10. Over the past 24 hours the House passed eleven opioid bills out of the Energy and Commerce Committee and three out of the Judiciary Committee and those are expected to reach the House floor in mid-May to be consolidated with the current House version of CARA (H.R. 953) before the House and Senate versions of the bill are conferenced this summer.

More as it develops.

Best,

-geoff

[#DIV28SUPER] Fwd: CFAS News: .. “Wasteful” Research presentation on the Hill

CFAS News
...
Looking to strike back against perennial cries of frivolous science, the Coalition to Promote Research and the Coalition for National Science Funding sponsored "'Wasteful Research?' Looking Beyond the Abstract," a congressional exhibition and reception that told the scientists' side of the story about projects that had been attacked for being wasteful.

[#DIV28SUPER] Note from Pat Kobor on last weeks Capitol Hill hearing on research

Dear Colleagues:

Please take a moment to read this wonderful Huffington Post article, describing an event held on Capitol Hill last week in which scientists whose research had been targeted as 'wasteful' were able to tell their stories directly to U.S. Sen. Jeff Flake, one of the writers of the "Wastebook."

I wanted to be sure you know the leadership role APA played in this event. As co-chair of the Coalition to Promote Research, I along with Angela Sharpe of the Consortium of Social Science Associations were the primary planners of the event. Working with the coalition steering committee, we raised the funds for the event, identified the participants and managed all the logistics.  Three psychologists were among the participants: Fred Muench of the Feinstein Institute for Medical Research, who is quoted in the article, Kim Phillips of Trinity University, and Karen Ingersoll of the University of Virginia. You can see the invitation and the program describing the participants' research at the CPR website link.

APA and COSSA have made it a major priority to defend research when it is subjected to political attacks. It makes me proud that our organization could help facilitate such important conversations between scientists and policymakers. This is why we advocate.

Several sister organizations were cosponsors or otherwise involved in the event and their contributions were key. Thanks to the Federation for Behavioral and Brain Sciences, American Educational Research Association, Society for Research in Child Development, and two scientific publishers: Elsevier and Sage.

Subject: Re: [#DIV28SUPER] New Fellows Nominations

Dear all,

Division 28 is seeking nominations for new Fellows. If you would like to nominate yourself or a colleague as a Fellow, please do so ASAP.

As described by APA, “Fellow status is an honor bestowed upon APA members who have shown evidence of unusual and outstanding contributions or performance in the field of psychology. Fellow status requires that a person's work has had a national impact on the field of psychology beyond a local, state or regional level. A high level of competence or steady and continuing contributions are not sufficient to warrant fellow status. National impact must be demonstrated.”

In Division 28 a successful nominee will typically be 10-15 years post-doctorate, have a minimum of 30 publications and a track record of external funding, and can document national impact of her or his research.

If you would like to nominate a colleague for consideration for Fellow status,  please send her or his CV and contact information to the address below. You may also nominate somebody who is already an APA Fellow (with relevance to our Division), but who is not yet a Fellow of Division 28.  Self-nominations are also welcomed.

Thanks,
Matt
