Submit questions by July 29, 2013 by 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time to: TRSP@mail.nih.gov.

NIH has released four new career award announcements, which will be administered by NIH under the Tobacco Regulatory Science Program (TRSP). The NIH will use designated funds from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Center for Tobacco Products (CTP) for tobacco regulatory science mandated by the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act (FSPTCA). Research projects must address research priorities under this regulatory authority. Participating NIH Institutes and Centers, including NIDA, invite applications for an October 2, 2013 receipt date.

RFA-OD-13-014 Mentored Research Scientist Career Development Award in Tobacco Control Regulatory Research (K01)

RFA-OD-13-013 Mentored Clinical Scientist Research Career Development Award in Tobacco Control Regulatory Research (K08)

RFA-OD-13-016 Pathway to Independence Award in Tobacco Control Regulatory Research (K99/R00)

RFA-OD-13-015 Transition Career Development Award in Tobacco Control Regulatory Research (K22

Short-term Mentored Career Enhancement Awards in the Basic Behavioral and Social Sciences:  Cross-Training at the Intersection of Animal Models and Human Investigation (K18) http://grants2.nih.gov/grants/guide/rfa-files/RFA-DA-14-002.html

A FOA entitled "Short-term Mentored Career Enhancement Awards in the Basic Behavioral and Social Sciences:  Cross-Training at the Intersection of Animal Models and Human Investigation", issued by the NIH Basic Behavioral & Social Science Opportunity Network (OppNet), invites applications for short-term mentored career enhancement (K18) awards in basic behavioral and social sciences research (b-BSSR). This funding mechanism will support development of research capability in b-BSSR, with specific emphasis on cross-training and establishing collaborations between researchers with expertise in animal models of basic behavioral and social processes and those studying similar or related processes in human subjects. Basic research using any non-human species or with human subjects in laboratory- or field-based settings is appropriate for this FOA.  Eligible candidates for this K18 will be either: (a) scientists conducting b-BSSR in animal models who seek training in the study of similar or related behavioral or social processes in humans; or (b) investigators conducting b-BSSR in human subjects who seek training in the study of similar or related processes in animal models.  Candidates may be at any rank or level of research/academic development beyond three years of postdoctoral experience.

[DIV28SUPER] Postdoctoral Fellowship in Addiction and Aging

Please see the below and attached advertisement for a postdoctoral fellowship at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in Addiction and Aging:
---

Postdoctoral Fellowship in Addiction and Aging: The intramural research programs of the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) and National Institute on Aging (NIA), research components of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), together with The Department of Psychiatry at the Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center, are sponsoring a three-year postdoctoral fellowship in the neuroscience of aging and addiction.  The fellowship will emphasize clinical and research training in the broad theme of the behavioral neuroscience of addiction in aging populations. Fellowship recipients will join specific laboratories that investigate mechanisms underlying the connection between addiction and aging, using both clinical approaches in humans and/or animal models, depending on their interests and expertise. Clinical research opportunities will focus on the refinement of clinical and research skills in phenomenological assessment (clinical diagnosis, neuropsychiatric evaluations, neuropsychological examination, analysis of epidemiological data on drug use in older populations) and human neurobiology (including genetics, neurophysiology and neuroimaging).   Basic research opportunities will focus on animal models of addiction and aging, neurobiology of behavior, molecular biology, genetics, cell biology, and biochemistry.

There are opportunities to design translational research projects within the clinical and basic science laboratories.  Courses and seminars in research design, research methodologies, and
neuroscience will be tailored to the individual. This program is designed for physicians who have completed their residency (e.g., Internal Medicine, Psychiatry, Neurology, or other) or PhDs in a relevant area (e.g. psychology, neuroscience). The program will prepare individuals to pursue a career in academic neuropsychiatry, behavioral neurology of addiction, and management and care of older persons affected by addiction. Transition to a faculty position at Johns Hopkins may be possible for fellows who are successful. The Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center is a rich research environment with faculty strengths in basic and clinical neuroscience in addiction, aging,
geriatric psychiatry, and neuropsychiatry.  This program is directed by Jean Lud Cadet, M.D. (NIDA), Nigel Greig, Ph.D. (NIA), and Gwenn Smith, Ph.D. (Johns Hopkins). Additional faculty
members from NIDA, NIA, and Johns Hopkins are actively involved in the program.

Applications from individuals who are members of under-represented populations in science, have disabilities, or are from an economically disadvantaged background are strongly
encouraged to apply.

Questions about the fellowship program can be addressed to any of the directors:  Jean Lud Cadet (Jean.Cadet@nih.gov), Nigel Greig (Nigel.Greig@nih.gov), Gwenn Smith (gsmith95@jhmi.edu).  Interested individuals should direct a letter of intent, copy of CV, and
three letters of recommendation from persons familiar with him/her to Ramona Conroy, at the
following address: NIDA/IRP, Molecular Neuropsychiatry Research Branch, 251 Bayview Boulevard, Suite 200, Baltimore, MD 21224. She can also be contacted at Ramona.Conroy@nih.gov.
