[DIV28M] 2015 APA Convention Call for Submissions

Dear Division 28 Members-

The December 1st submission deadline for the 2015 APA Convention in Toronto (August 6-9) is quickly approaching.  The division leadership would like to encourage symposia that involve both senior and junior scientists because one of the presidential initiatives for 2015 is to increase intergenerational collaboration and communication within Division 28.  Individual submissions are encouraged as well.

The highly successful NIDA/NIAAA Early Career Investigators Poster Session and Social Hour will again occur this year!  There will be travel funding opportunities for early career (e.g., students, postdocs, new to the field) and diversity candidates.  There will also be special consideration for local participants.  The session is open to all, and we encourage strong early career, diversity, and local applicants.

Cheers,

Matt

Co-Occurring Substance Use and Mental Health Disorders

Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth

The Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth offers a unique postdoctoral training program in a developing area of transdisciplinary/translational research, co-occurring substance use and other mental disorders (COD) http://geiselmed.dartmouth.edu/scd/ The philosophy of this program asserts that to effectively impact the problems of addiction and mental illness, one must be fully aware of their co-existence, etiologies, phenomenology, and clinical manifestations. Moreover, knowledge of integrated clinical approaches and the healthcare systems that serve those with co-occurring disorders  are necessary to inform the questions to be asked in laboratory, animal and human imaging and clinical research studies. At Dartmouth, six interconnected groups from neuroscience through implementation research, and across multiple departments provide research opportunities in social, behavioral, neurobiological mechanisms, treatment development (psychosocial and pharmacological), technology-assisted treatment and dissemination, and health services  and implementation. Faculty include preeminent national/international leaders in COD research, MD and PhD investigators with strong histories of training scientists, and a team of support faculty committed to establishing a structured training program in COD. Research teams include neuroscientists, psychopharmacologists, behavioral health technologists, clinical trials and contingency management experts, health services researchers, anthropologists, statisticians, economists, and clinicians. Program faculty lead diverse projects funded by many NIH institutes (NIDA, NIAAA, NIMH, NCI, NCATS and NICHD), and also multiple foundation, Department of Education, and VA supported studies.

1-2 positions available on or after July 1 2015.  Appointment:  2-3 yrs.  Eligibility: Applicants must have completed their training in psychology, or a related discipline and be U.S. citizens or permanent residents.   Trainees are selected on the basis of scholastic record and commitment to a career in co-occurring disorders research.  Benefits: Stipend, medical insurance coverage, and travel funds supported by NIH Institutional Training Awards.  For more information:  Contact Dr. Alan Budney (alan.budney@dartmouth.edu).  To apply: Forward curriculum vitae, statement of research interests, and 3 letters of reference to:  Attn: Dr. Alan Budney c/o Mr. Mark Milam (Mark.A.Milam@dartmouth.edu).  Application deadline: 1/1/2015.

[DIV28M] 2015 Election Slate

Dear Division 28 Members-

The time has come to decide the election slates for next year. We will be electing a Member-at-Large and President. The slate for Member-at-Large is finalized, but the slate for President has yet to be filled (we have one candidate, but we typically have a slate of two people from which to chose). If elected, the cycle would run as follows: President-Elect in 2016, President in 2017 and Past President in 2018. Only Division 28 Fellows can run for President--if you are a Fellow, please consider running, if you know a Fellow, encourage that person to run. I am happy to field any questions or concerns. If you are interested, please let me know by January 5, 2015.

The Division is on an upward trajectory. We need strong, innovative leadership to maintain that course. Even in busy times, we must all be willing to take on a little more to ensure continued scientific representation in APA!

Thank you for your consideration and help,
Bill Stoops.
APA Division 28 President-Elect.

[DIV28_ANNOUNCEMENT] Apportionment ballot ---Please Act

Dear Division 28 members--

You should have recently received your Apportionment Ballot from APA. The responses on this ballot are used each year to determine the composition of APA's Council the following year and your ballot includes 10 votes to be distributed based on your interests.

As Division 28 President, I am writing to ask you to do two things BEFORE DECEMBER 15:

1. Allocate your 10 votes (or as many as possible) to Division 28.

2. Return the completed ballot to APA (must be received by DECEMBER 15).

If the ballot is not returned, we can risk losing an opportunity to insure representation of their Division on Council. Especially since we are a small division, we need our representation on Council. Please take a moment to complete and return the ballot today if you have not yet done so.

Thank you very much for your time and commitment to Division 28.

Cheers,
Ellen Walker, PhD
Division 28 President

[DIV28SUPER] FW: ACT NOW! Urge Congress to Approve Proposed Funding Increases for Federal Science Agencies!

See below a quick and easy opportunity for you to encourage Congress to increase funding for NIH and other research agencies.

From: FASEB E-Action List <opa@faseb.org>
Organization: FASEB
Subject: ACT NOW! Urge Congress to Approve Proposed Funding Increases for Federal Science Agencies!

Dear Colleague,

We need your help to encourage Congress to finish work on the fiscal year (FY) 2015 budget for the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the National Science Foundation (NSF), and other federal science agencies. As you may know, earlier this year the Appropriations Committees proposed funding increases for NIH and NSF, and agriculture and veterans research. These increases will not become a reality unless Congress approves an omnibus appropriations bill in the next few weeks. Please click HERE to send an email to your Senators and Representative today. Urge them to sustain the federal research enterprise by approving a FY 2015 omnibus appropriations bill.

Sincerely,

Joseph R. Haywood, PhD

FASEB President
